219,440 people with diagnoses of lung carcinomas are expected for 2009 in the U.S. 159,390 lung cancer deaths are expected in the USA for 2009. Most people with lung cancers cannot be cured. Every two years more Americans are killed by lung cancers than we lost in four years of WWII. There aren't very many people out there with "chronic" lung carcinomas. 60% of people diagnosed with either major type of lung cancer (non-small cell or small cell) are dead in 1 year. 73% are dead by 2 years. 1 in 7 people diagnosed with lung cancer survive 5 years (~15%) Most of those who are cured are cured with initial surgery - - not with chemotherapy. Male smokers - lifetime risk of lung cancer 1 in 6 Female smokers รข€“ risk of lung cancer is 1 in 9 Risk of lung cancer in non-smokers is 1 in 77 Can J Public Health. 1994 Nov-Dec;85(6):385-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7895211 Smoking does not give everyone lung cancer. Perhaps 5 out of 6 men get away with it. But it is like playing a slow form of Russian roulette. People may smoke if they must. But we usually cannot fix them if they are the ones to develop lung cancers. And the cost of treatment for lung cancers each year in the U.S. is astronomical.

I Googled this for you, read and then give your opinion about smoking causing lung cancer: The complacency non-smokers have shared over the years is no longer a viable option. Smokers and non-smokers alike are vulnerable to a disease which is largely incurable. Among patients with lung cancer, only about 14% live five years after their diagnosis. In the face of a disease that seems to have neither rhyme nor reason, what can we do to protect ourselves? First, assess your risk for lung cancer; then take measures to prevent the disease. What are the risk factors for lung cancer? Gender: Unfortunately, women seem to be more vulnerable to lung cancer. Research has shown that female smokers are more susceptible to the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarettes. In another study, a gene linked to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was found to be more active in women than in men. It did not matter whether the women smoked or not. ------------------ Can I also point out that there is more cancer causing chemical from your car exhaust fumes that seep into your car when you are driving than the chemical from cigarettes, chemicals also from industrial areas and from Radon Gas that seeps from the ground through the floor of your home that cause cancer - all new homes are being build with a tin foil lining to prevent the radon gases entering our home - this is in the UK but I presume USA is the same.
