Lung cancer may be seen on chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT scan). The diagnosis is confirmed with a biopsy. This is usually performed via bronchoscopy or CT-guided biopsy. Treatment and prognosis depend upon the histological type of cancer, the stage (degree of spread), and the patient's performance status. Possible treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. With treatment, the five-year survival rate is 14%.

The presence of a tumor or mass in the lung can be seen by an X-ray. However, to determine if it's cancerous, and the type of cancer if it is cancerous, needs to be done by a biopsy.

A new study from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, shows that screening for lung cancer with chest X-rays can detect early lung cancer but also can produce many false-positive test results, causing needless extra tests. This report, which summarizes preliminary results from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, appears in the December 21, 2005, Journal of the National Cancer Institute.* About 170,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Most are diagnosed when their disease is advanced, and nearly 90 percent die within two years. But catching lung cancer early - when surgery is a treatment option - improves survival substantially, and 70 percent of patients who are diagnosed early may survive at least five years hoping 2 get useful from this and from the site... :) Good Luck

A routine xray found my primary tumor, but it failed to show all the little tumors that were also in the lung.. only the CT scan picked those up. So, an xray can show if it is large enough but a CT is much more precise for early detection.

My mom on her birthday had a chest x-ray. She felt totally fine, no symptoms. They found a spot on her lung, with a body scan they found that the cancer has gone to her brain, and lymphnodes. She isn't doing very well since her 2nd round of chemo. She is 75 so its alot harder on her.
