should my mom be tested for lung cancer! how do i bring this up?
my mom's 45 and has been smoking for probably, 13 years on and off. im so worried now that she has lung cancer or is going to get emphysema. she has been coughing quite a bit and is short of breath sometimes, but not all the time. the thing is, she doesnt even talk about the fact that she smokes... she tries to hide it. and my friends grandpa who is 50, just 5 yrs older than her, died from lung cancer today and im just freaking out she could have it. please help! what should i do?

Drag her ass to the clinic...Tell her about ur friend and tell her that u care and everything u just mentioned....

tell her gently. make up that you saw an article that people ages 40 & up that smoke(d) need to get tested for lung cancer. ask her if you thinks she needs to go. if she says yes no problem. if she says no, tell her as her daughter you want her to live to the longest possible. tell her how you feel she should defiantly get tested. if she says no, go to your room and cry. she'll call you down and beg her. tell her how much she means to you.

You can tell your mom that you are worried about her. But, she is free, and over 21 and she will do with her life exactly what she wants, not what you might want. So, tell her you are worried, but don't expect her to change for you.

Hi. If you're worried about her, I'd definitely bring it up, but don't try to tell her what to do. Instead, just talk about your friend's grandpa and that you're concerned. However, if it makes you feel any better, the causes of lung cancer aren't as clearly understood as some people think. I've known 4 people who had it during my life, and 3 were non-smokers. Also, as I'm sure you know, the vast majority of smokers do not get lung cancer. It's a terrible habit - I'd never say otherwise! But there's so much stuff floating around out there implying that every smoker will ultimately get lung cancer or emphysema, and that is simply not true. Not even close.
