Anyone know anything about recurrent lung cancer

Anyone know anything about recurrent lung cancer?
My father in law, 74, was just diagnosed with a recurrence of lung cancer, two spots in one lung and one in the other. His original cancer was about 4 years ago, limited to one lobe, surgically removed. He is diabetic, very overweight, high blood pressure, just not the picture of health overall anyway. He will have a PET scan to check for distance metastesis on Wednesday. I am pretty worried about his chances. Anyone know how 'beatable' a recurrence of lung cancer in an older guy, former heavy smoker, in marginally fair overall health is?

IF this is a recurrence of primary lung cancer with three visible masses in the lungs, it would not be considered a curable situation. You will not know until all the tests are in. It also depends what type of lung cancer this is - the histology - which can only be accurately proven with biopsy examination. It does not sound "beatable" as you describe it, but his doctors are the ones to make this prediction and explanation. Best wishes and hopes for the best.
