this was just in the news. it's not cancer, but another lung disease caused by a flavor additive in microwave popcorn. it's only a danger if you inhale the steam of freshly popped bags when you open them and if you have multiple bags of popcorn per day. if you're worried about it, let the bag cool before opening it or pour it into a bowl, avoiding the fumes.
4 :
no if you open the bag directly towards your face, the fumes from the glue can cause cancer

There is no scientific documented evidence that popcorn microwaved or not causes lung or any other type of cancer. The warning that you heard about was based on opening bags of popcorn, inhaling the fumes, and developing a lung condition. All the warning was based on was one person who seems to have had some type of reaction. Eat as much of it as you want and if you have a lung condition already . . just don't inhale the fumes from the popcorn bag.

did you read the whole story? that guy ate about 3-4 bags of popcorn everyday for about 10 years and he always inhaled deeply when it first came out. anything as excessive as that would be bad for you.
7 :
It is not cancer. It's called popcorn lung. Prolong exposure to the steam coming out of a just popped bag is bad for your lungs. Visit this link for more information.

Glenn Evers, a former DuPont Co. engineer, has accused the chemical giant of deliberately ignoring evidence that its grease-resistant coating on paper products may have been entering consumers' blood at high levels. PFOA Evers first became concerned about the health effects of a perfluorinated chemical used for food packaging in 1987, when company tests showed it was dissolving into wet paper at much higher levels than the FDA had approved. When the paper coating is dissolved and absorbed into the human body, it breaks down into perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a likely carcinogen. DuPont has denied Evers's allegations, The FDA will also soon decide how much to fine DuPont for failing to report for more than 20 years' possible health effects associated with PFOA. Millions of Bags of Popcorn, meanwhile........

It looks like the story is true, Factory workers in plants that produce microwave popcorn are showing ill effects from the fumes. There is ONE case where a consumer, eating several bags a day, every day, has come down with the same type of illness. To answer you question, "is it safe once in a while", yes it is safe. Just don't breath in the fumes right after popping. TMD Links below, Associated Press and A Google search on the subject.
