My Dad has had a persistant cough for a month now, he got antibiotics but they didnt do any good. He doesnt smoke. He went to the docs and he listened through the stethoscope and couldnt hear anything so he has to go for an xray tomorrow. Im worried that by sending him for an xray that he may have lung cancer.

Does he have shortness of breath? Does he cough up blood sometimes? Did he experience weight loss? Those are other symptoms of lung cancer.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses or cancer. Wait for the results. It may just be an allergy - I reacted like that to some new carpeting on the floor.

The doc knows that antibiotics should have responded by now. X-rays are cheap diagnostic tools and can help figure out what is going on. I bet your father started to feel better and stopped taking his antibiotics. Stopping antibiotics early is one of the dumbest things one can do. When you start again, they are no longer effective. At least with an x-ray he should get results almost immediately. If they were really worried about lung cancer they would be ordering a CT Scan. The standard procedure is the x-ray first since it is cheaper.
