when the tumor is found, they will want to do a biopsy. If they find that it is cancer, Providing that the tumor can be removed, they will schedule the person for surgery. If the tumor is removed or most of it is removed, they will probably do some chemo or radiation to kill the cells that they may have missed. Then you get sick and lose your hair. Then hopefully 5 years later you are in remission. Hope this helps you out a little. Good luck with your report. There is a lot of information so just keep digging.

i know that everybody is different, but generally, how often does one have to smoke to get lung cancer

i know that everybody is different, but generally, how often does one have to smoke to get lung cancer??
I have smoked for about a year and a half. I know everyone's immune system is different, but have you ever heard of anyone getting lung cancer from smoking for only a year or a year and a half or 2 years? Is it common? I don't smoke a pack a day, either. I may smoke about 4 or 5 at most. I quit recently.

you don't have to smoke at all to get lung cancer. just being around someone else that smokes is enough. some people get it for no apparent reason. I don't think anyone can answer this for you. just don't smoke at all.
2 :
it may take years for your lungs to get clean again, but smoking short and quitting is always better than keeping on smoking. I have smoked for 15 years and I also recently quit. (1st januari) I too am afraid of lung cancer and I think you can count yourself lucky that you were able to quit. keep it up and your lungs will really clean themselves and with a tiny bit of luck you will never get it. I think my lungs will take a little longer to get clean again... :)
3 :
you quit thats great get a check up and go on with youre life. some people never smoke and get it (Dana reeves). good luck.
4 :
good job on the quiting. now stay...um....quit-ed. :) if you are going to get lung cancer, its too late to do to much about it. ask your doctor to check for it. he will most likely have ways of finding out if you have it already. best bet is to detect it early.
5 :
you don't have to smoke to get lung cancer and you could be a lifelong chain smoker and not get it either. there is more involved than just smoking or not.
6 :
Well, life insurance tables have a reduced life expectancy for smokers from proven statistics. So if you quit permanently you most likely will live longer than if you don't, plus your life insurance monthly premium could be significantly lower. Good luck for continued breathing here on earth.
7 :
Anyone that has ever smoked even one time could get lung cancer.
8 :
We can choose not to smoke but we can't choose not to breath the air which is full of industrial chemicals. Congrats on quitting. About 50% of those who get lung cancer never smoked, as is true of many other types of cancers. They know that a virus causes cervical cancer and it wouldn't be surprising if virus' are found to cause many (or most?) other cancers. Stress induces hormones by which some cancer cells travel, so reducing stress is a biggie.
9 :
You dont have to smoke to get lung cancer. You could be secluded from the world all your life and still get any type of cancer.
10 :
when iwas young iwas told you did not have to smoke to get cancer for cancer was already in our bodies infacted we were born with it and any thing could bring it on such as a sudden shock and istill beleive in it

can lung cancer be identified through Xray

can lung cancer be identified through Xray ?
what are the symptoms of cancer .. can we trace it early after having an Xray.

1 :
Lung cancer may be seen on chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT scan). The diagnosis is confirmed with a biopsy. This is usually performed via bronchoscopy or CT-guided biopsy. Treatment and prognosis depend upon the histological type of cancer, the stage (degree of spread), and the patient's performance status. Possible treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. With treatment, the five-year survival rate is 14%.
2 :
The presence of a tumor or mass in the lung can be seen by an X-ray. However, to determine if it's cancerous, and the type of cancer if it is cancerous, needs to be done by a biopsy.
3 :
yes, there will be homogenous opacity seen in lung field
4 :
A new study from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, shows that screening for lung cancer with chest X-rays can detect early lung cancer but also can produce many false-positive test results, causing needless extra tests. This report, which summarizes preliminary results from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, appears in the December 21, 2005, Journal of the National Cancer Institute.* About 170,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Most are diagnosed when their disease is advanced, and nearly 90 percent die within two years. But catching lung cancer early - when surgery is a treatment option - improves survival substantially, and 70 percent of patients who are diagnosed early may survive at least five years hoping 2 get useful from this and from the site... :) Good Luck
5 :
A routine xray found my primary tumor, but it failed to show all the little tumors that were also in the lung.. only the CT scan picked those up. So, an xray can show if it is large enough but a CT is much more precise for early detection.
6 :
yes, it looks like a whole cluster of cluods in your lungs

My mom on her birthday had a chest x-ray. She felt totally fine, no symptoms. They found a spot on her lung, with a body scan they found that the cancer has gone to her brain, and lymphnodes. She isn't doing very well since her 2nd round of chemo. She is 75 so its alot harder on her.

They say that once you have stopped smoking for five years your lungs clear all the nicotine out and they are as good as never smoked,so I think your mum has a less likely hood of getting cancer than some-one who still smokes 40 a day.I hope this has helped you
2 :
People who never smoked get lung cancer so it's always a possibility.
3 :
Actually your lungs never recover fully, but after 10 years they will have recovered substantially, and the lung cancer risk is about 1/3 to 1/2 of that of someone who continued to smoke. This is still significantly higher than a "never smoker."

Is lung cancer less common below age 45

Is lung cancer less common below age 45?
A friend of the family may have it and she is only 43. She started smoking when she was 20. Isn't that really young to develop lung cancer, even for a smoker? What are her chances of survival if it is caught in time? I know it doesn't look so good for her because it is one of the worst cancers someone can get. I feel so bad for her and she has 3 young grandbabies. :( so sad. I hope she beats the odds.

The good news is that lung cancer has a better outcome now than it did 20 years ago. 43 is very young but 20 years of smoking is very hard on anybody. Hopefully she has quit now and going to try and get it treated for her kids sake. Best wishes
2 :
Yes it is rare in people under 45 only 2% of all lung cancer occur in patients under 45 years old. Without knowing what kind of cancer she has and the stage and grade it is nearly impossible to tell you anything, but if it was found at a stage 1-2 her chances of survival a likely to be good.

how can dettect when you have lung cancer

how can dettect when you have lung cancer ?
you could detect lung cancer by just looking at some one smoke for a very long time or maybe just maybe by the look on their faces if the look exhausted or other faces that look weird to you you could right away tell if they have lung cancer .

Try feeling around for any abnormal lumps in or around the lung area. You should really perform a monthly lung checkup, and see a doctor if you feel anything new.

when you smoke like a redneck

There is not doubt that smoking is one of the worst habits on the planet if not the worst. There are many numbers and other alternatives that you could try to stop. On my website I have a blog that is talking about what a lot of countries are starting to do to try to cut down on the level of smokers http://shopdesignerclothing.com/Blog.html

What are the causes of lung cancer in dogs

What are the causes of lung cancer in dogs?
I found out today that my 8 year old mini poodle has lung cancer. The vet gave him about a month. It's absolutely devastating. But what they didn't answer is how he got it. Are the causes for lung cancer the same in dogs as it is in humans? If so, how did he get it? Nobody in our house smokes, and he's never been exposed to harmful inhalants. I just want to know if there is anything we did to make him sick, because we have another dog and I do not want him to meet the same fate.

Unfortunately the world we live in and subject our dogs to is often the cause and in other cases , there is no specific cause. You can read more about it from http://www.vetinfo.com/lung-cancer-dogs.html. I'm so very sorry for the news. I too, have lost several animals to various forms of cancer over the years.
2 :
Same as with humans, there is no real reasons. We are all born with cancer genes and I feel animals are to. Sorry for your dog, I had a female who lost her life to cancer of the bones in her front legs. It was devastating to us.
3 :
I'm so sorry to hear this. No, it was probably nothing you have done, some animals , just like people are predisposed to certain cancers, smoking doesn't cause cancer, it just aggravates cells that are already present in the lungs. Technically we all have cancer cells, whether or not they turn into malignant cancer is dependent on many things, lifestyle is only one. It very well could have simply just been your poodle's genetics. Don't blame yourself, there is nothing you have done to make your puppy sick. I would not be concerned that your other dog will get lung cancer as well.
4 :
Our dogs are open to all the environmental and product chemicals the same as we are.... kibble is not the best thing to feed dogs despite what commercials on TV tell us....and many now feed Raw and Bone so they don't feed rubbish to their dogs, such things as 'carbon' in kibble is burnt material to give the colour...that alone is proved as cancerous........ we as a society vaccinate, spray chemicals on pets and give them chemical wormers...............however you can only do your best, learn as you go along and it certainly won't help blaming yourself........sorry about your poodle, he is very young
5 :
Do you have a wood stove ??? all dogs have cancer like humans but it is just impossible to tell who will be effected by it I'm sorry I have a dachshund that is loaded with Cancer too she has it in her glans Again I'm sorry :(

What is the approximate survival rate of the stage IV lung cancer

What is the approximate survival rate of the stage IV lung cancer?
One of my very close relatives was diagnosed to have kidney cancer on September last year. She underwent a surgery, which reportedly went very well. However, she went back to re-check this summer and was detected that the cancer has spreaded over both of her lungs. Since this September, she has been taking a medication named Gefitinib, which is supposed to be the only effective drug against lung cancer as of today. But I would really want to know what is her real chance of surviving from the lung cancer. Thank you very much.

Your relative is at a very advanced stage.....Although every sufferer is different it is my experience that at this stage it could be anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, unfortunately lung cancer is a very rapid and aggressive cancer and is not often detectable untill its later stages...hence why the survival rate/expectancy is quite low.... i send good wishes to you and your relative xx
2 :
Your friend has a secondary cancer or mets to the lung which means that the kidney cells have metastasized. This is not the same disease as lung cancer, nor does it behave in the same way. Gefitinib is one of a whole family of new targeted therapy drugs that is approved for lung cancer but can be used off trial for other cancers as well. Gefitinib is a Tyrosine kinase inhibitor . . other drugs in this family include Dasatinib, Erlotinib, Imatinib, Lapatinib, Nilotinib, Sorafenib, and Sunitinib. All these drugs, but Imatinib in particular has shown significant efficiacy in the treatment of Gastrointestinal stromal tumor and Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. As for your friends chances for survival .. well . . if the Gefitinib is working for her than she should know by now. It takes about four to six weeks for a chemo to be tested to see if it works on a patient. Usually a patient will have a CT to check to see if the disease is stable, progressing or improving (tumors disappearing) . . her doctor may decide to keep her on the gefitinib as long as the tumors do not progress. So, your question is impossible to answer. She should be checking into the possiblity of surgery or radiofrequency ablation to handle mets under a certain size. However, the gefitinib, if it is working . . has very few side effects and a patient can tolerate it over a long period of time . . so, that may be her best option at this point. That is up to her to decide. People living with cancer http://www.plwc.org/

Panda is right, kidney cancer that has spread to the lungs is not lung cancer it is still kidney cancer. My wife is stage IV kidney cancer and is on one of the targeted therapy Panda mentioned sunitinib (brand name Sutent). She is doing better on this, than any other therapy she has tried.I think targeted therapy is the best thing going for kidney cancer at this time.
