I am very sorry you have to deal with all this hon. In all likelihood your grandma has been fighting the cancer a long time. Both the treatment and the disease have taken their toll. Basically there are two types of lung cancer, small cell, and non small cell. Staging of Non Small Cell Carcinoma. # Stage IIIA: The tumor may be any size. Cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes near the lungs and bronchi, and in the lymph nodes between the lungs but on the same side of the chest as the lung tumor. # Stage IIIB: The tumor may be any size. Cancer cells are found on the opposite side of the chest from the lung tumor or in the neck. The tumor may have invaded nearby organs, such as the heart, esophagus, or trachea. More than one malignant growth may be found within the same lobe of the lung. The doctor may find cancer cells in the pleural fluid. # Stage IV: Malignant growths may be found in more than one lobe of the same lung or in the other lung. Or cancer cells may be found in other parts of the body, such as the brain, adrenal gland, liver, or bone. Stages of Small Cell Lung Cancer Doctors describe small cell lung cancer using two stages: * Limited stage: Cancer is found only in one lung and its nearby tissues. * Extensive stage: Cancer is found in tissues of the chest outside of the lung in which it began. Or cancer is found in distant organs. Changes to her appearance will depend on what organs are affected. Certainly she will become thinner and her skin will have a bluish tinge due to lack of oxygen. She may need to be on an oxygen tank 24/7. Fatigue is a certainty. Her disease and her medications/side effects will affect her appetite so you should expect some weight loss. My best advice is to spend every day you can with your grandma.

Language Icon Esta página en español Cost of Lung Cancer The financial costs of lung cancer are high. One study estimated that the cost of treating lung cancer in the United States in 2004 was about $9.6 billion per year (see Costs of Cancer Care). This made it one of the most expensive cancers to treat in the country.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine way into the thousands.

hope this helps but i was in the hospital for four days, and without insurance being on morphine, steroids and a really strong antibitoic for a bacterial infection and mono i ran up at 10,000 dollar bill. from just four days... cancer requires a lot of different treatments.. extensive, expensive things. i wouldnt even know where to begn.
9 :
An estimated half a million dollars in needed to treat or replace a lung.
10 :
1) In the study, Yabroff's team collected data on 306,709 men and women aged 65 and older diagnosed with breast, lung, colorectal or prostate cancer between 1991 and 2002. These data were taken from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results (SEER) Medicare database. The researchers compared costs of initial cancer treatments including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other hospitalization. In 2002, the total cost in the United States for initial cancer care was $6.7 billion. Over the course of the study, the average cost for treating a lung cancer patient went up $7,139, to an average of $39,891. 2) Patients who survive through the year incur the costs of initial treatment ($26,042) during the first three months, and then incur nine months’ worth of maintenance care costs (0.75 × $11,325 = $8,494) during the remainder of the year. The total cost incurred during the first year by those patients who survive the year is therefore $26,042 + $8,493 = $34,535. Lung cancer patients who die of lung cancer during the first year incur the initial treatment cost and then incur terminal care costs for the remaining three months of their lives (because those who die are assumed to die midyear). Total costs during the first year post-diagnosis in this case are therefore $26,042 + (0.5 × $30,112) = $41,098. 3) 60% of the direct health care costs in the US go to treat tobacco related illnesses 20 % or 1 in 5 of all deaths in the US are attributable to smoking. Smokers have a 70% higher death rate than nonsmokers Tobacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fires and aids combined. Tobacco kills more people each year than losses from WW I, Korea and Vietnam combined, approximately equal to WW II losses Deaths from smoking 1990: cardiovascular diseases...179,820 lung cancer...............119,920 other cancers.............31,402 respiratory diseases......84,475 total.....................415,597 The medical costs for the treatment of smoking related diseases strains hospitals and private and publically funded insurance providers. Smokers miss more days of work than non-smokers which results in costs to society from work absenteeism ... Other costs are related to decreased work productivity due to chronic smoke related illnesses and impairments, and eorkers taking time away from work for smoke breaks... Society assumes costs for the care of burn victims...25% of residential fires are caused by smokers... Direct property damage costs from fires caused by smokers are also a big cost to society Society assumes the cost of smoking cessation campaigns and prevention strategies

2 :
Hi Matt, What you are describing does not sound like cancer to me. To begin with you are probably very young eventhough you have not stated that. Cancer grows slowly. It does not suddenly wake you up. Blood in sputum can be due to trauma, infections, severe boughts of cough, bleeding disorders etc. When people have cancer they lose weight slowly and have pus discharging from the lungs, these people are usually chronic smokers or mine workers. I hope I have assured you that your symptoms are not consistant with a diagnosis of cancer.
3 :
Blood in sputum can come in some other conditios too. U may have just ruptured the mucus membrane by forceful coughing. In pneumonia, bronchectasis and TB blood can come.

What are the symptoms of lung cancer

What are the symptoms of lung cancer?
I've heard constant coughing and fatigue (being tired) and weight loss are some of the symptoms, my mother was diagnosed with pneumonia almost four months ago, and was coughing all the time, tired constantly and she has lost alot of weight. She is still coughing constantly, however she is no longer constantly tired and is just as active as she always was. Does this mean it's possible she doesn't have lung cancer? We are still awaiting results.

It doesn't mean she does or doesn't..A lung cancer sufferer will usually suffer back pain too and possibly cough up blood............
2 :
It is possible that it is not lung cancer, but if you are concerned maybe you could go to the doctor and have them run tests to be certain it isn't cancer.
3 :
girl i know the feeling see im not fat either but im not exactly skinny. u could do something crazy and dont eat or do the right thing and keep off the pounds by staying healthy. but if u really want to ill give u some advice. eat a big breakfast and a smaller lunch and a smaller dinner, never fully get filled if ur still hungry drink lots of water. exercise at least once a day for 30 min and u will see results. there are some supplements you can take to help speed up your metabolism too. im doing it and so far its working. best of luck http://loseweight.theinch.info

Can Social smoking lead to lung cancer or other diseases

Can Social smoking lead to lung cancer or other diseases?
I am a social smoker. Usually 2 at a time when I drink or out with friends. On average I smoke no more than 3 cigarettes a week. This obviously isnt good for my health. Does this behavior increase my chances of lung cancer or other diseases the same way smoking a pack a day can?

Think about it....second hand smoke has been linked to lung cancer. You are inhaling direct nicotine and smoke. Now what do you think? Yes, it can and does cause lung cancer regardless of how little amount you smoke. You are also at a potential risk for bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, asthma and more. You'll do yourself good if you quit.
2 :
Yes, it can.
3 :
yep, even nonsmokers get lung cancer. Anyone can get any kind of cancer. Why increase your odds?
4 :
Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer. Yes, a person how smokes several packs a day is at greater risk than you are, but that does not mean that you are not at risk.
5 :
Any and all smoking leads to lung cancer. Even 2nd hand. So if you want to smoke then do it because chances are you will die from someone else's smoke anyhow. Enjoy it.
6 :
Let's put it this way....if you smoke socially....you might as well be a regular smoker. Obviously smoking 3 a wk will not give you cancer as fast as a pack a day....but you will still end up w/ cancer won't you??? (i smoke a pack a day! bad me!)
7 :
Yes it can. Just being around someone who is smoking can lead to lung cancer. You put yourself at a higher percentage of risk with every cigarett you smoke. I suggest you stop now wail its just something you do to pass time, if you wait it could be harder. The cool thing is to NOT smoke, smoking is out this year.....LOL
8 :
Regardless of how much or little you smoke, the same health problems are there for you. Besides the usual lung cancer, asthma, bronchitis, and other breathing problems, you can also get lip, throat, tongue, and gum cancer. All of these are disfiguring as well as potentially lethal. Unlike lung cancer (if you even survive), the scars from these surgeries are clearly visible forever. Stop now, before it becomes a pack-a-day or more habit. All bigger smoking habits started as a couple here and there. I don't know of anyone that began smoking as much as they do now.
9 :
SMOKING ANY AMOUNT IS BAD AND CAN LEAD TO TONS OF HEALTH PROBLEMS - CANCER - HEART -EVEN PROBLEMS WITH YOUR EYES
10 :
Hi, Great post! Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I thought I wasn't addicted! Here's what I tried before finding success: hypnosis, those fake cigaretts, the nicotine patch, and group therapy....none worked. I finally tried this HERBAL patch I bought 6 months ago on the net. They claim a 97% success rate. Well, it worked! They had a sweet deal which was a free 10 day trial for only $3.95 including shipping (it's regularly $53 for 10 days)!! I don't know if they still have that deal, but it's worth a try. http://www.alllsite.info/stop-smoking-free.php Good Luck

Is There Any Cure For Lung Cancer In The Near Future

Is There Any Cure For Lung Cancer In The Near Future?
Tonight I found out my friend has lung cancer. She said she's been sick for a while now. I don't know how to feel, what to do or how to think. I just want to know if there is any hope for her at all.

There is always hope. Medicines change every week, something new. As for a cure, being a cancer patient myself, I am an optimist. There is a lot involved, how far along the cancer is, the patients overall health, any other medical problems. As for how you feel, it is a devistating blow to family as well as close friends, shock, depression, you feel as well as your friend. How should you feel, be more understanding of them now, but do not treat them as a fragile object to be felt sorry for. If you are not going to be a caregiver to this friend, there are ways you can help. Offer to take them to treatments, to help with small things. The worst thing a cancer patient can feel is "being alone". Let them know you are there to help. If thereis someone there that is going to be the caregiver to your friend, offer to help. There are survivors out here, that have bee in remission for years, and lead normal lives. The one thing we have all talked about is, "our fairweather friends", those who once they found out, either found other things to do, and left us standing alone, or treated us like we were pocelian dolls, fragile and ready to break. We're not, we laugh, and love and hurt, the same as others do. My prayers go out to your friend, and you as well..
2 :
there isnt any cure for lung cancer, but the doctors are trying to find a medicine well, i am really sorry about ur friend but atleast she is lucky enough to have u as her friend
3 :
i was hoping for the same thing when my friends dad had it . i think that they are trying really hard but there just ain't non yet i wish i could say there was.
4 :
The cure is surgery. It depends where the tumor is located at. Sometimes they take out a whole lung lobe to remove the tumor. It depends on the size of the tumor and the type of tumor. Some are slower growing than others. A Oncologist would be able to answer some of these questions.
5 :
There are four types of lung cancer and the one that is most aggressive with the poorest prognosis [adeno-bronchial carcinoma or small oat cell] is the one that is not caused by smoking tobacco. There is always hope. We know more about what to do for cancer than we did even a decade ago. The most important thing is to make today count. That is true for all of us in whatever state of health we find ourselves.
6 :
There is always hope as long as one believes there are.I know a couple of people who has beat cancer and both did not for a minute think that they were not going to make it .A positive outlook and positive people need to encourage your friend never let her or your self give in to negative feeling and doubt.Have her to eat natural foods and walk a lot to keep her resistance up.When we just lay down and quit we give up. (Many blessings
7 :
If the tumour is on the outer side of the lung then its possible its operable, if the tumour is in the middle or the cancer has already spread to another area then surgery would not normally be an option. Its very unfortunate that lung cancer is not often detected till the later stages, making a cure with chemo alone a very difficult task, they often offer some types of chemo to extend the life but usually its only by months and not years. I hope your friend has good luck and i send best wishes.X
8 :

9 :
always hope ...this research project is out to find a cure...........http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/
10 :
I just want to add my two cents. There is ALWAYS HOPE. Don't let cancer or anyone or anything take that away from you. There isn't any cure for any cancer at the moment, but there are treatments - although they are harsh and not too pleasant, they are there. And sometimes it can be put into remission with no recurrence and other times it comes back. Everyone responds to chemo, radiation etc. different. What works for one, might not work for another and vice-versa. Right now your friend needs your support and she needs you to be the friend you were before finding out she had cancer. Worst thing to do is treat her like she has a "disease". She is still the same person with or without cancer and she needs you to help her through this fight. The best thing you can do for her is to laugh, cry, share your thoughts, feelings, create memories, moments... enjoy each day you have and make it count.
