Unfortunately, lung cancer is among the most virulent cancers. It as a high mortality rate.
2 :
If it's detected early, small-cell carcinoma of the lung is responsive to chemotherapy and radiation, but it's a VERY malignant tumor with high tendency toward metastasis, so if it's detected late, then treatment options might be limited because it might be so widespread and involved in too many organs. You should inquire about his treatment options, because it is generally one of the more-treatable cancers if detected somewhat early.
3 :
I'm sorry to hear about your dad - it is a scary diagnosis and a devastating one. Lung cancer is one of the more deadly cancers. The highest probability for long-term survival is for those whose tumor is confined to one lobe of the lung. Under those conditions, surgery is an option, followed by chemotherapy. However, in most cases, the cancer is not discovered until the cancer has spread beyond one lobe. That may be your dad's situation. After that, surgery is not an option because they cannot remove more than one lobe and because the cancer has often metastacized to other organs. My dad was one of the lucky ones. His tumor was confined to just one lobe and was able to have surgery and chemo. He finished chemo about a year ago and to date remains cancer free. He had surgery at age 83, which is unusual in itself. He quit smoking at age 40 and was in good physical condition because he exercises and takes care of himself. Without that, he would not have been a surgery candidate and would probably not be here today. There are a lot of new treatments coming on line that have extended the lives of lung cancer patients and have made their remaining time easier. You should do whatever research you can to find to see if there are new treatments that will help. My best wishes to you and your dad. It seemed like a long time till we knew what my dad's actual prognosis was and it was a very difficult time for all of us. My prayers are with you.

my mother passed away from it and no it can't be cured. It is very bad, and I am sorry to ear....my prays are with you......if it is prolonged or put in remission chances are high it will return
5 :
DON'T ever give up ! Find a a bigger hospital ,cancer center ,or university. My mother has lung Cancer and thankfully is heading in to her last round of chemo and her prognoses is very good, But we went to a few local DR and were not happy with the treatments they recommended so now we drive aver 2 hours a way to The Karmanos cancer center in Detroit MI. The bigger cancer places are more willing and have more options than smaller places. There is always something that can be done. If you are willing to try. also look in to CANTRON www. nu-gen.com I hear it works really good on terminal cancer. Good Luck ! keep the hope !
6 :
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a subset of lung cancer that behaves differently than the majority of lung cancers (non-small cell lung cancer or NSCLC). It is not treated in the same way others are (which is usually surgery), regardless of whether it is a small tumor or a large one. In fact, it is not staged in the traditional I through IV stages as NSCLC, rather, you divide it into just two types: limited stage (small tumor) or extensive stage (advanced or metastatic). While SCLC is very responsive, meaning you can get rid of it with chemotherapy and radiation; it is often times not curable, and tends to recur as time goes on. There are some patients who are cured, and the prognosis depends on whether your father has limited or extensive stage. In regards to how long your father has to live, remember, numbers are just that, numbers. It is usually quoted as an average. Which means there are ppl who live less and people who live a lot more. Hope this helps, good luck.

I hope this news I have is helpful. Read the blog that I link to below in my sources....Here is an excerpt: "4 February 2007 Watch the Edmonton News Report of Cancer Cure Dichloroacetate (DCA) Edmonton Global News television report on dichloroacetate cancer cure and interview with discoverer Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, Department of Medicine, University of Alberta."

Search for answers by looking outside of the medical field, in the area of alternative medicine. Five hundred years ago, people said the world was flat. Today, people say that if the FDA and AMA haven't blessed something, it can't be real good. Well, here's something I know to be real AND good. It's a little different take on cancer treatment-- In 1990, I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, stage 3-B, but I've survived. My doctors were great people, but they were limited to surgery, chemo and radiation by profitable AMA treatment policy. During the year in treatment, I started learning about alternative medicine. I'm a retired engineer, and this is what I've pieced together--our IMMUNE SYSTEMS become weakened by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and reduced oxygen. Once that happens, our body becomes vulnerable to common STRESSORS. Stressors can be environmental, like viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, electromagnetic waves or pollution. They can be internal things like emotional or job stress, or poisonous people in our lives. Aging is also a contributing factor. So this means: WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM + STRESSORS = DISEASE (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.) Our bodies have 60 trillion--yes, trillion--cells, and there are always some mutating into cancer cells, but a healthy immune system kills them before they have a chance to get a foothold in the body. It takes a LONG time, usually, or a high level of stressors, to weaken the immune system to the point where it won't do its job, but once cancer has formed, it will generally spread rapidly. THIS IS IMPORTANT! There are ways to BEAT cancer that are currently being used in Europe and around the world, and there are some great books on the subject. I know because I've read about 50 of them from cover to cover. Here's a list of the best ones. Some are out of print and getting hard to find-- "The Cure for All Cancers", ISBN 0963632825 "A Cancer Therapy", ISBN 0882681052 "Oxygen Therapies", ISBN 0962052701 "Hydrogen Peroxide--Medical Miracle", ISBN 1885236077 "The Natural Cure for Cancer--Germanium", ISBN 0533071410 "Killing Cancer", ISBN 0705000966 "Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About", ISBN 0975599518 I know of people whose cancer has 'spontaneously remitted' (WENT AWAY for no known reason) AFTER they went on programs of herbs and nutrition to restart their immune systems. You and your family must look out for yourselves to stand a chance of being healthy. This is not a joke, and I'm not selling anything--just trying to help. I am using the things I learned in those books right now to fight off a second infestation of cancer. I've been at it for over a year now, and think I'm going to make it. Use what works for you, and pass on your success. Best of luck.

Lung Cancer?
My grandmother had a biopsy done on her lung about 2 weeks ago and it came back negative, however when they performed a PET scan on her Tuesday, they said it was active.....Active tumor? Active Cancer? Anyone have an idea???

I don't know but I don't think it means cancer but that they found something... they will have to check the scan...probably your grandma knows what it means as she has the right to ask and they have to tell her....xxx from what I understand when I read the below description of a Pet scan if something is active it means there is a likelihood that some cancer exists... but I am sure all will be done for your grandma that is possible...xxx http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=152
2 :
PET scan is a functional scan in which a labelled glucose molecule is given, this on uptake gives the functional picture. But here I feel they mean active tumor.Other lesion may be present which give false positive in few cases, but repeat biopsy would be advisable.

lung cancer?
what are the chances that 17-year old gets lung cancer for 7 months of smoking? and generally, what are the chances?
Cancer - 6 Answers

1 :
it depends on the diagnostic work ups of the doctor... almost everyone has cancer even the babies...
2 :
slim to none but long term exposure to second hand smoke can be a cause. There is also radon gas from basement foundations that could be a cause. This is all unlikely but possible.
3 :
Minimal. Smoking causes lung cancer after many years. The problem that keeps it going is the addiction. Stop now - for some people it becomes too difficult after a long time - I have smoked for many years. Wish I didn't.
4 :
7 months of smoking is unlikely to have caused cancer.. however, there is still an increased risk of it. Anything that causes the wrong type of DNA mutation could cause you to have cancer, so just quit smoking ASAP, or even better.. never start. Lung Cancer Causes Cigarette smoking is the most significant cause of lung cancer. Research as far back as the 1950s clearly established this relationship. * Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals, many of which have been identified as causing cancer. * A person who smokes more than 1 pack of cigarettes per day has a risk of developing lung cancer 20-25 times greater than someone who has never smoked. * Once a person quits smoking, his or her risk for lung cancer gradually decreases. About 15 years after quitting, the risk for lung cancer decreases to the level of someone who never smoked. * Cigar and pipe smoking increases the risk of lung cancer but not as much as smoking cigarettes does. About 85% of lung cancers occur in a smoker or former smoker. The risk of developing lung cancer is related to the following factors: * The number of cigarettes smoked * The age at which a person started smoking * How long a person has smoked (or had smoked before quitting) Other causes of lung cancer include the following: * Passive smoking, or sidestream smoke, presents another risk for lung cancer. A person living with a smoker has twice the risk of lung cancer of someone not regularly exposed to smoke. * Air pollution from motor vehicles, factories, and other sources may increase the risk for lung cancer, but the degree of increase has not been established accurately. * Asbestos exposure increases the risk of lung cancer by 9 times. A combination of asbestos exposure and cigarette smoking compounds the risk by as much as 50 times. * Lung diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also create a risk for lung cancer. A person with COPD has a 4-6 times greater risk of lung cancer even when the effect of cigarette smoking is excluded.
5 :
What we eally want to know is whether that short period of smoking will have caused a cancer to grow. We can estimate a risk that one already has a dormant cancer. But if they have one, will it be triggered to grow by that short exposure to smoking? We can not know that for an individual. The population as a whole we can say that the risk is essentially the same as a person who has never smoked. But, if you happen to be someone who has a dormant cancer, we will put the risk a lot higher. We find out which you are way later. The risk of stimulating growth of a non-existent cancer may not be zero. There may be some actual causation as well as growth stimulation. It may take growth stimulation over a lot of time to get a lethal cancer by age 65 or 70. With only 7 months stimulation, one might be 95 before a cancer becomes lethal. That is no more than an uninformed guess. But some studies suggest that beta carotene can substitute for tobacco in stimulating growth of lung cancer. That is the only kind of cancer fingered in the study.
6 :
Minimal to negligible. If she had a cancer in the lung, it would be other kinds of cancer that metastasize to the lung. The chance of that happening for all 17 year old girls will be very low still. Probably 1 in 10 million.

Lung cancer?
My mom had breast cancer months ago and they treated it with radiation, she under went a routine chest film and they found a mass on her left upper lobe in her lung. She sees her DR on tuesday to go over the CT scan with contrast they ordered after her chest film. So what now? Could this be a result of the breast cancer? If so can it be in her brain or somewhere else? Any one can help me id appreciate it so much and please don't hold back on the answers cause it may not be what i want to here i need to know what everyone thinks here.

only the doctors can tell you if it was matasticised from the breast cancer. it can spread to any place, my mom had colon cancer that moved to her lungs and her pancreas and she died in a year. if she had only seen to the colon trouble much sooner.
2 :
Eventhough, only a doc can really answer this! I can tell you that cancer can spread to other places only to be detected later! Look, at it this way if it is and I pray it isn't! At, least they caught it in time! Best of wishes!
3 :
Did they remove her breast? Did she undergo chemo too? If she was treated with only radiation and her lymph nodes were involved, yes it could have metastasized to her lung. The technology we have today and the advances that have been made in cancer research are so promising. Don't let her get discouraged and if she is not happy with the current approach to her treatment, get a consultation from another doctor as second opinions never hurt....
4 :
yes only doctor can tell you for sure after test.. but it could of spread if its the fast spreading kind.. and it could be completely different kind too.. after you get the info go to www.webmd.com and put the name of it in the search and it will tell you all about it and what can be done.. good luck to your mom. prayers with ya
5 :
Metastasis is the movement or spreading of cancer cells from one organ or tissue to another. Cancer cells usually spread through the bloodstream or the lymph system. STAGE IV means a tumor of any size with spread beyond the region of the breast and chest wall, such as to liver, bone, or lungs. Please see the web pages for more details on Metastasis and Lung cancer.

My ex-sister in law just found out that she has a very aggressive lung cancer which is now in both lungs the doctors said today. Do people actually survive this type of diagnosis? Can Chemo help her? Lung cancer?
I want to write a book about cancer. Lung cancer to be precise. I have searched the internet for information & I havn't found much. Can anyone tell me anything about a relative of theirs who had it or something? What happened to them. I don't want to upset anyone, I just want to get my info correct. Thank you so much.

My husband passed away two years ago from brain and lung cancer. I will help you but you need to contact me through the website. I learned so much in the few short days with my husband after the doctors found the cancer.
2 :
If you want info on lung cancer take a tripe to a cancer clinic (depends on where you at),
3 :
Why don't you write a book about something you know about? Usually writers write about something they know about. Do you really think you are going to get a publisher? Its sad to know that people like this procreate. Common sense is dead. This is a scam to get your email addresses. Do you really think this person could not find anything on lung cancer on the internet? Helllloooooooooo
4 :
I have terminal inoperable nsc lung cancer. If you would like to contact me thru my email, I would be happy to help you out.
5 :
I cannot answer but, maybe you can help to explain the ismael water and his supplement. curing cancer in less than a month and maximum three months. Visit www.ismaelwater.com Pls dont forget to publish your comment
6 :
I'm not sure it's a good idea to get all your information for a book form Yahoo Answers. There are already a LOT of books about cancer, have you read them all and planned what'll make your book different? If I were you, I'd find some proper info first (you may need to get hold of some medical textbooks and contact some doctors/professors or a cancer charity). Don't risk upsetting people by asking them to tell their story if there's a chance it's not going to be published and help others.
7 :
If you are serious, contact the Web link provided and volunteer to help. There is not enough attention given to lung cancer since it is not a popular disease, but in order to write a book, you need to do your homework, which may take years. Unless you have a passion for the topic or a personal experience, it would be easy to give up. Again, if you are serious, contact the Web link and help.

The only way to know if you have lung cancer is to get x-rays at the doctors office and then further testing if they see anything on the see anything on the x-ray. They do surgery and/or chemo or radiation if you do have cancer.
2 :
It is highly unlikely that you have lung cancer if you are only 16 and do not smoke. However, one symptom of Lung CA is a persistant cough. If you do have this, go to your MD. He will listen to your lungs, and may get a Chest X-ray. If you have a nodule in your lung, they might do a biopsy, which is taking a sample of tissue from your lung, and run tests on it. Depending on the type of Cancer, they might remove part of the lung and treat you with Chemo or Radiation. Once again, this is very unlikely for someone of your age and history. If you are concerned go see your doctor.
3 :
Why do you think you have cancer at 16? Lung cancer at your age would be very rare...if you have trouble with your lungs...see a dr....they don't usually do surgery for lung cancer...radiation and chemo are more likely...good-luck! If you would like to check your symptoms go to www.webmd.com
4 :
Seriously, lung cancer isn't the type of cancer people usually just *get*. As long as you never smoke (including marijuana) or spend a lot of time around people who do, you aren't very likely to ever get it.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer?
Just recently my grandma had caught pneumonia and had to be hospitalized. She was lucky that she had no fluids in her lungs when they took X-Ray of her chest. So she got discharged 2 days later with some antibiotics, but 2 days later, the doctor called and said that they had found something small in her lungs and it might be a tumor. She just recently got a CT scan and went for checkup but still havent gotten results. The doctor said she might have to go get a biopsy to see if it's cancer or not. Ok so here's what I'm wondering, is there a slight possibility that it could be lung cancer or something that has to do with the lungs? She has never smoked before in her life. Some information would be nice.

Just because one does not smoke does not make them invunerable to cancer. There are many possible risk factors for lung cancer, and there is almost always a possiblity that it is cancer. Stay calm, in the event that it is a tumor, detecting this cancer now is much, much better than waiting for other symptoms to manifest, and for the cancer to spread.
2 :
Relax--I know it's easier said than done but, at least try. Your grandma is going to need you and you wouldn't want to upset her by letting her know you are worrying, would you?? There is the possibility that it could be cancer but there is also the possibility that it may be a non-malignant tumor or a cyst or some other type of growth, it may even be the pneumonia returning. Just take each day as it comes and wait for the doctor's to inform your family as to what it is that is taking place with your grandma. Good Luck and Take Care!
3 :
There is a high possibility that it is a cancer. Healthy people don't just get pneumonia out of the blue. It is the cancer that obstructs her airway and caused pneumonia. Be prepared.
4 :
Not sure.
