I live in Italy and actually I have a different impression; smokers are decreasing (-15%), especially since new more restrictive laws about smoking in public places (2 years ago): they are 11 million, 22% of population. About lung cancer, there are 30,000 new cases every year, over a population of 59 millions (total, not only because of smoke). I took that from Italian magazines. Here's a comparison, although up to date to 2002: http://www.euphix.org/object_document/o4664n27172.html http://www.euphix.org/object_document/o4860n27172.html

Lung Cancer

biggest cause is smoking but there are other ways of getting it
3 :
Exposure to cancer-causing agents through a person's job. This includes exposure to asbestos, either in the mining or construction industries. Inhaled asbestos particles may remain in the lungs, damaging lung cells. It also includes exposure to certain industrial substances like coal products, vinyl chloride, nickel chromate, arsenic, and exposure to some organic chemicals like chloromethyl ethers. Exposure to radiation, either through one's occupation or for medical reasons, such as repeated x-rays, though this is quite uncommon. Radon gas, which occurs naturally in rocks and soil in certain areas, may cause lung damage and may eventually result in lung cancer if it seeps into your home. The presence of radon in the home can be measured using an inexpensive kit that can be purchased at department or hardware stores. Research suggests that some people are more at risk for developing cancer if their body is not as easily able to deal with certain cancer-causing chemicals. This inability to neutralize cancer-causing chemicals is believed to be inherited. Researchers also believe that in some people, when they come into contact with certain cancer-causing agents, their immune system, instead of neutralizing them, will actually make these agents more aggressive within the body. Such people, therefore, would be more sensitive to tobacco smoke and chemicals known to cause cancer.

Chernobyl Disaster is biggest cause.
5 :
my grandpa died of lung cancer too when he was in his 60's but he was a light smoker did yours work around any chemicals at his job or did he live in a polluted area? maybe his immune system just wasnt that strong, im sorry for your loss

read a bout : open the second & fourth link on : Www.cancer-tips.info
7 :
Smoking is the biggest cause but also inhaling polluted air and asbestos is a common cause of primary lung cancers. However malignant melanoma (skin cancer) for example can spread to the lungs and cause lung tumors that can be fatal. So in that case it would be exposure to suns harmful UV rays without sunscreen. Liver cancer can also spread to lungs.

It was probably the smoking not the paralysis.
2 :
That's possible. Paraplegics smoke more.
3 :
No. There is no connection between paraplegia and lung cancer. It was probably the cigarettes.

very sorry about your mother... i know it sounds crazy and unfair... cancer IS unfair... second hand smokers still breathe in the smoke... sometimes it's worse because they breathe it without the filter like smokers do... i found some info online... http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=35422
2 :
If somebody breathes in cigarette smoke it can hurt them, no matter who is actually smoking the cigarette. Actually, the smoke coming off the lit end is usually worse, being completely unfiltered.

Go to the hospital. I don't care why it's happening, or why you think it's happening. If you're coughing up blood, than it's serious. I can guarantee you, there's someone at the hospital who can help you.

Does anyone have information on lung cancer

Does anyone have information on lung cancer?
I don't know much at all about lung cancer, but this guy I know came to school today and said that he recently found that he has lung cancer and the doctors have given him three months to live. Are there no treatments for lung cancer? How can he possibly be dying so fast, after he just found out that he had it? Is there anyway to find out if he is telling the truth or just being overdramatic because his girlfriend wanted to break up with him? Anyone with any information about lung cancer would greatly be appreciated! Thanks everyone.

Lung cancer, like any cancer, is easy to cure. Apple seeds. Cancer forms when cells are made the wrong way and the body doesnt have the things it needs to catch and destroy the cells. Apple seeds and many other seeds have a vitamin that is necessary for the body to perform this function. Dint listen to what the doctors say!

Lung cancer is not easy to treat, but it can be treated. If he is a teenager he doesn’t have lung cancer. Teenagers do not get lung cancer. Doctors do not tell people they have 3 months to live and send them on their way! If he was really that ill he wouldn’t be at school and he would look ill. It’s a pretty stupid story to come up with. How is he going to explain he is still around in a few months?
3 :
no way. my dad just got diagnosed with lung cancer and is being held fro many test fr the past 2 weeks. they have to run so many test before even telling you an estimate on your lifespan. lol he must really not want her to break up with him.
4 :
Survival rate depends on stage, age, cancer cells differentiation and the type of cancer. It's better if he has Non small cell lung cancer than small cell because the latter comes back very soon after the treatments. If he has stage IV NSCLC then he will normally live for 6-9 months more. Lung cancer is the most fatal cancer. Almost nobody survives after 5 years from diagnosis.

Anyone have any information on outcome of stage 3 Lung Cancer

Anyone have any information on outcome of stage 3 Lung Cancer?
My mom found out 4 months ago she had stage 3 lung cancer she had 35% of the lung removed just completed her Chemo and radiation. She had a scan done yesterday it came back clear. Are her chances of survival higher now. And hopefully it is completely gone. Her surgeon lead us to believe she would only have 2 years with us...

Hi Rena, it seems pretty good that the scan came back clear...I wonder why the surgeon told you that she had an estimated life expectancy of 2 years if the scans came back clear- did he say that before the results of the scan? I dont know much about it so I can't give a very knowledgeable answer, but here is a good site that explains a lot about lung cancer, it's a British site but it's more or less the same as in the U.S.A. http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/type/lung-cancer/index.htm?script=true Best wishes to you and your mother.

I don't know if there is any way to really predict based on that information, but I did want to share my Dad's story to give you a little hope. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to have one full lung removed (and also underwent chemo and radiation). He survived for another 15 years before suffering from another unfortunate bout of cancer which was completely unrelated to the first. However, he did really well for all those years while only having one lung. The remaining lung became larger and stronger, kind of a super-lung. I do hope that your mother continues to do well. It really is hard to deal with serious illness when it is a parent and hope that you have all the support you need. Take care!
