Do you know anyone taking Docetaxel and Carboplatin for Non-small cell Lung Cancer

Do you know anyone taking Docetaxel and Carboplatin for Non-small cell Lung Cancer?
My brother in law has just been diagnosed with cancer of the Lung, Liver, and Bone. Does not sound good at all. The Dr. said he was going to start him on a regimen of those two drugs. I googled them and it seems like individually they have low side effects. I wonder if anyone here has taken them or knows someone who has taken them?

I have taken carboplatin and taxol which is a bit different to your brother in law. But I can say what I was on made me feel fairly sick. They do have some good anti nausea tablets, also make sure he rests a lot. I wish him well.

I'm trying to find out if smoking gives cancer other than the typical lung or nose/throat/mouth/tongue type associated with it.

Bill Hicks (American comedian) died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. Was a heavy smoker, talked about it in his act quite frequently, opening with the joke "I'm a heavy smoker, I go through about 2 lighters a day".

Yes, but the cancer wasnt caused by the smoking.

most throat/mouth/tongue cancer comes from people who dip tobacco. Rick Bender (baseball player) got cancer from dipping. http://media.naplesnews.com/media/img/photos/2008/11/20/081120FE-MF-SmokeKid03_t607.jpg

Is it the nicotine or the smoke particles that cause lung cancer

Is it the nicotine or the smoke particles that cause lung cancer?
people that only chew tobacco or snuff don't seem to have the high rates of lung cancer that smokers do.They may get more mouth cancer but not the same lung cancer as smokers.
Cancer - 8 Answers

1 :
It can
2 :
Actual its the other ingrediants in the cigerettes that cause the cancer. Read the label of a pack of cigerettes and you'll see.
3 :
yeah its the crap in the smoke/chew. the nicotine is pretty addicitve but isnt really all that harmful, except it might raise your blood pressure a bit. youre right, chewers dont get lung cancer but they get tounge, throat and mouth cancer at much higher rates so its still just about as bad
4 :
Just the smoke. Nicotine is fairly harmless in itself. You can get the patch to get the nicotin high without the side effects but the dose is small and the effect is lame. Kinda makes ya sick if you have not been exposed to it before.
5 :
I think it is the tar that gives you lung cancer I quit smoking 2 months ago and started chewing and I fill a lot better I can smell the air better and taste food better.
6 :
the smoke particles cause lung cancer because they fill the lungs with gunk... nicotine causes the addiction
7 :
Nicotine just makes it addictive. Other than that, whilst not the best substance in the world, has no major health threat. So its the other things (like tar) in the cigarette that cause the cancer.
8 :
That's because chewing tobacco never gets to the lungs. Nicotine causes the addiction but not the cancer. What causes the cancer is all the other crap that tobacco companies mix in with the tobacco to make the cigarettes and cigars taste better and burn better. I have read that the American Native people who smoke only dried tobacco leaves have a very low incidence of lung cancer. Of course today we also have all the wonderful polution in the air from chemical plants and car exhaust plus the pollution of the water by chemical plants who produce chemical fertilizers for golf courses and farms and people's lawns. Smoking is only one way to get lung cancer. My next door neighbor never smoked a day in her life but died of lung cancer. She used to commute to New York City everyday for many years because that was where she worked. Sucks doesn't it? LL

What my chances of getting lung cancer

What my chances of getting lung cancer?
I am 26 years old and just quit smoking two days ago. I know that's not very long but I am very determined to make it. I started when I was 18 years old, so I smoked for 8 years. Assuming I quit now and never smoke again, what are my chances of ending up with lung cancer still?
Cancer - 2 Answers

1 :
well, at least you quit. since you didn't smoke for long, there's a possibility that you wouldn't GET lung cancer. other than that, i think you just ask a doctor :)
2 :
Congratulations! Keep it up! You will feel SO much better in a couple of weeks. I really dont think you should worry about it much since people who have never smoked a cig. a day of their life end up getting it often too. Then you have people that smoke ALL their life and never get it... Just know that you have 'decreased' your chances tremendously by quitting! Especially at your age because the risk increases as we get older if you continue smoking. I have read that as time goes by...after you quit, the longer you stay quit the more your chances decrease AND have also read that after several years of staying smoke free that your chances become almost as low as someone that has never smoked! You didnt smoke that long, so I think your body will recover dramatically over time! Be fore warned though...if you pick it back up it will be even harder the second time around to quit. SO DONT DO IT. I quit for 2 1/2 years and picked them back up...have tried several times to quit again and failed. SO KEEP UP THE DAYS!!! AND DONT EVER THINK THAT YOU CAN HAVE JUST "ONE"! Your body is already healing and the poison has left your system! ISNT THAT GREAT!!! :-)

How or Can I Create a "national day" for lung cancer deaths

How or Can I Create a "national day" for lung cancer deaths?
My mom passed on June 26, 1999. I would like to create a "national" "Loved Ones Lost To Lung Cancer" awareness day. Can I do this and if so how? Thanks for your help! Lori

You've just started it, well done and my condolences on your loss. Generally, the first thing you need to do is to gather support. Begin by contacting local cancer hospices, hospitals, telling them of your intention. Ask them for a letter of support. Then use these letters of support to snowball a national campaign. I think you will have little trouble in gaining support. After this you should be able to also get support from cancer charities, pharmaceutical companies and the like. Good luck. And remember, it's basically about PR and getting your message out there. You've already started, so don't stop. It might also be an idea to register yourself as a charity (or the name / idea as a charity) so that you have some official background). Let us know how it goes, and again, good luck
2 :
It already exists as an entire month (November). If you wanted to do something special for your mother in that day you could ask your company to allow you to do some sort of fundraiser. For example, if people contribute $10 to the American Cancer Society they get to wear jeans or shorts or something on that day. EDIT: Sorry for some of the jerks on here. I think school is out for the summer for many of them and they have nothing better to do.
3 :
Oh, please. We don't need yet another National Day of Whatever Awareness!
4 :
There are a gazillion "days" for cancer awareness already: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_1_Cancer_Calendar.asp Rather than create a new one (which nobody will notice with all the other ones there are), why not organize your friends to help raise money for one of the many worthwhile cancer charities? The American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society are two good ones. I'm sorry for your loss--lost my own mom to breast cancer over 20 years ago, and I still miss her a lot.

emphysema and possible chance of lung cancer

emphysema and possible chance of lung cancer?
Last Monday my grandmother had to get chest x-rays and they found a mass -- The doctors didnt like the way that it looked so she had an appointment with a different doctor to discuss things, which was today -- I just found out that she has Emphysema and Monday will get a bronchoscope biopsy to find out if she she lung cancer. I am very scared and concerned for what she may have to go through in the future is she does have lung cancer. It is bad enough having emphysema, but that and cancer. She also has diabetes and is not in the best of health. Yes she did smoke for quite a bit of her life and did quit and has for 8 years now. I just dont want anything to happen to her. What is to be expected in her future? I know that the cause is due to her smoking so please I really dont wanna hear its her fault for smoking.

I'm sorry to say the prognosis is not very good.
2 :
I'm not sure that you've asked an actual question, but just as general information lung cancer is very common in patients with emphysema because they are both usually caused by the same factors. i.e...smoking.
3 :
lost both of my parents to emphysema. my father pasted within three or four years, never quit smoking and didn't follow doctor advice, my mother lived 11 years plus, she followed doctor advice and gave up smoking. both had trouble their last years but mom was around to see her grandchildren. brings tears to my eyes still. u have my prayers. tough love and you can all enjoy the life she has with her still. helping her will help you, i know. be there for her... and she will always be with you.
4 :
my grandmother was diagnosed with both of your concerns aswell. it is a really tough thing to deal with. i'll be straight down the line ok..... expect to find that your gran will have trouble breathing and eventually have to be using an oxygen tank. i can't say how quickly things will progress for it's different for everyone. just be there for your gran, support her in every way and don't have any regrets. wait and see what see what the doctor says too, it may not be as bad as you think. my gran survived 10years with emphysimia and lung cancer so keep your chin up.
5 :
I have had my one lung removed in 1990 due to lung cancer, and at present have emphysema with only 19% lung function. My quality of life is not as great as it used to be, but I live a reasonably active life, thanks to modern medication. So there is life after emphysema, cancer is a different story all together, depending if you have it in one lung or both. Smoking is one of the curses of the modern world, just a pity that the majority of smokers ignore all the warnings and think that it will never happen to them. Nicotine is also one of the most addictive drugs that is freely available to the public.

I know how you feel, but there is hope if it turns out to be cnacer. I am currently in the Bahamas with my Mother who has Terminal Lung Cancer. There is a clinic here that has been in operation for over 30 years. We have been here for 4 of our 8 week stay, everyday is really neat. A lot of the patients stick around in the meeting room/ waiting room to visit, and share stories and catch up. There were 40 people all talking and laughing, talking about cancer and life, the returning patients talk about how bad their cancer was 4, 8, 10 even 18 years ago when they started coming to the clinic, the cancer that has since disappeared. There is nothing dangerous or foreign to the treatment, just building up your immune system in a very effective manner. If you want to know more contact me or go to www.immunemedicine.com I cannot tell you how impressed I am with what I have seen and how my Mother has already improved. I know one man who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he skipped all US, conventional (poisonous, dangerous) options and went to the Bahamas and is doing great now. Another man who has been coming here for 18 years that had prostate cancer. People with just about every type of cancer. But, they are honest here, you send them your medical information and they will tell you whether they believe they can help you or not, and they will send you home if they don't think you are benefiting. My mom has shown drastic improvements and is feeling so much better. and we are in the Bahamas so we are having a good Mother-Daughter vacation. I have also done a lot of research on the Cesium Chloride/DMSO treatment and think that it has merit and you can do it at home. The clinic here believes that a supplement/liquid called VIBE works really well in addition to other treatments, I am going to look in to that some more. US doctors push chemo and radiation, but when you look at the statistics and side effects it is not a good option for most people. My Mom had both before we came here and now that I know more about them and have researched them I feel horrible that I let her go through them. She was lucky (so far) the only long term side effect she has shown is short term memory loss. The stories I have heard from the other patients here about how they were treated by US medicine astound me. One lady went home to have a shunt put in her liver so she would be ok to come here, but they refused to put it in unless she agreed to do chemotherapy, is that what our country is about? Denying helpful procedures unless we agree to dangerous, toxic ones? The drug companies run US medicine at least when it comes to cancer treatment and it is sad. Most doctors will tell you not to try alternative medicine and some will refuse to even see you again if you do. To some degree they are not to blame, they have not been taught anything about it other than that it is evil and wrong and they would be rejected by their colleagues if they suggested alternatives. I would also like to tell you about another lady staying at the house we are staying at, she is 86 years old and has breast cancer. She arrived at the clinic the same day we did and is doing very well. Her immune system continues to improve and she gained 2 pounds since last week. She is absolutely thrilled with this treatment and knows that it is helping her. There is another elderly gentleman who just finished his 8-week treatment and is feeling better as he returns home. He has cancer around his optic nerve, but also had diabeties. His daughter said that while he was here on the treatment he needed a lot less insulin than usual. I am NOT claiming that the treatment also helps with diabeties, I am just saying that is what his experience was. Please whatever you do, research first. One very helpful website is www.cancertutor.com Good luck!!

I've been smoking weed for a good year now, do I have lung cancer

I've been smoking weed for a good year now, do I have lung cancer?
Ever since the middle of Summer 08, I've been smoking weed. Usually only once or twice a week. The most I've smoked in a week was 5 or so times, but that was only on two occasions. I also have asthma.. Do you think this is enough to cause lung cancer?
Cancer - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I wish it was for you potheads, Sadly no your gonna need to smoke alot more =[
2 :
hey, you should just stop smoking weed (or smoking anything) altogether, full-stop.
3 :
No you don't have lung cancer. But if you have asthma it's pretty dumb to breathe in anything other than air. Pot has irritants in just like cigarettes.
4 :
Kenny, please stop. I moderate an online lung cancer support group and read the effects of chemo and radiation. Plus, the grief family members go through is awful. Pot is illegal and for many good paying jobs--there will be background checks. You are going to have to admit you smoked pot. If you lie--it will be even worse if caught. Stop right now and people are very open to forgiveness and just being young and foolish. Go for a natural high and clean out your lungs. Go running!
5 :
Chances are you won't have lung cancer but you need to think this whole weed smoking thing out and make sure that is indeed what you want to continue. Yes, it's illegal but you have to be responsible. You need to also go through your family history to see if any other family member had cancer. There's ALWAYS a chance, if, and or but.
6 :
Ok first of all dont listen to those bastards, theyre dumbasses. If you have asthma, use a vaporizer. iv even heard rumors that it helps people with asthma. and u dont got lung cancer...people smoke everyday for like 30 yrs, nobody ever died from weed...ESPEACIALLY if u use a bong, or better yet a vaporizer...but i dont like vaporized personally, they are alot more boring than blunt and bongs...u probably dont care, but whatever... use a vaporizer
7 :
youll be straight weed is not going to give you cancer dont pay attention to these losers now cigarettes cause cancer but yea dont worry about it the only thing we should all be worrried about is that swine lol

Is lung cancer less common below age 45

Is lung cancer less common below age 45?
A friend of the family may have it and she is only 43. She started smoking when she was 20. Isn't that really young to develop lung cancer, even for a smoker? What are her chances of survival if it is caught in time? I know it doesn't look so good for her because it is one of the worst cancers someone can get. I feel so bad for her and she has 3 young grandbabies. :( so sad. I hope she beats the odds.

The good news is that lung cancer has a better outcome now than it did 20 years ago. 43 is very young but 20 years of smoking is very hard on anybody. Hopefully she has quit now and going to try and get it treated for her kids sake. Best wishes
2 :
Yes it is rare in people under 45 only 2% of all lung cancer occur in patients under 45 years old. Without knowing what kind of cancer she has and the stage and grade it is nearly impossible to tell you anything, but if it was found at a stage 1-2 her chances of survival a likely to be good.

They don';t have the cancer gene, weird huh?
5 :
Like with most risks in life, lung cancer is a possible consequence of smoking but not everyone develops it. Think of it like this: when you get in a car you run the risk of getting into an accident, but everyone who gets into a car doesn't get into an accident.
6 :
Because the anti smoking lobby made all that up. Smoking is great for releiving stress and a smoke after good sex is also mandatory. So therefore with that all said for the non- smokers I guess they are not getting good sex..
7 :
smoking is not bad for you. it can also protect from some stds
8 :
The same reason some people who never smoke do get lung cancer. Genetics and luck.
9 :
my own personal theory that no one wants to hear - smoking creates a tar coating on the lungs. It's kind of like paving your driveway with asphalt - you cover it up so nothing gets through to the underside. That's how I feel about smoking. I think it covers your lungs so cancer, etc. can't get through. I know everyone in the medical community and people who know people who've died of lung cancer will disagree, but that is what I think.
10 :
You actually don't know smoking causes lung cancer. The correlation between smoking & lung cancer has only been proven as a weak one. Many other variables contribute to this disease, such as predisposition to cancer, family history. Mesothilioma from asbestos exposure for instance almost exclusively found in smokers.
11 :
dont be nervous , eat carrot , onion
12 :
My dad has been smoking since he was 16, now he's 51, he is still fine and the tests show that there is nothing wrong with his lungs. He smokes 12 rothmans a day atleast.

what is this lump/growth called?and is this growth very common in lung cancer patients

what is this lump/growth called?and is this growth very common in lung cancer patients?
my husband developed a rapidly growing lump/growth on his upper back, that resembled a giant pimple and grew to the size of an orange.shortly after having surgery to remove a lobe from one lung .due to lung cancer.

This is not common for a lung cancer patient. This sounds more like an abscess. Is it painful, tender, inflamed? Too much missing information here. His doctor should be telling you and your husband what this is. We can't see the lesion or examine this area of his back. If this grew to "orange size" in a week or two, it is not likely to be malignant.

My grandpa currently has lung cancer and I found out today that when he eats he vomits everything out. Is it normal to vomit food? Please need answers ASAP, thanks.

It's normal if he is undergoing chemo or radiation therapy. If he's not currently undergoing therapy then its not normal, he needs to be seen by a doctor.
2 :
If he's having chemo, nausea and vomiting are very common, but there are a lot of anti-nausea medicines his oncologist could be giving him. Have him check to see what they can do for him (they give me anti-nausea medicine at the time of chemo, and they can also provide pills for afterward). He may also lose his hair, and he will definitely be tired a lot. There are many strange symptoms he may have (I have colon cancer, and my hands tingle like I have frostbite when they get a little cold), so don't be surprised if strange problems crop up.
3 :
its normal if he takes Chemo

3 :
Not likely but there are many other things you could be suffering from. Please go see a doctor.
4 :
???? No. Of course not. Do you smoke at all? If you do, now would be a good time to quit.
5 :
possible but extremely unlikely. go to the doc and get a check up.
6 :
The symptoms you are having could be due to a number of different things. The most important thing for you to do is to visit your doctor. Here is a link to some useful information about lung cancer: http://www.nowwhat.org.au/info/factsheets/lung-cancer I hope you've found my post helpful.
7 :
hmm you have too many vague symptoms, but you are not coughing..see your doctor asap.
8 :
18 year-olds do not get lung cancer nor do you have symptoms of it. If your symptoms persist see a doctor.
9 :
No, 18 year olds don't get lung cancer. Lung cancer is rarely diagnosed in anyone younger than 40. 85% of cases occur in people over 60, and incidence peaks in people aged 75-84. What you describe are not symptoms of lung cancer.

Your mom died of lung cancer and your dad STILL smokes? How sad......ask a doctor....and Best Wishes......
2 :
This question kind of made me feel sad because you are taking this serious as you should and your father still continues with the habit..try talking to your dad and tell him your feelings about smoking.. I think there is a high chance for you to get it :( ask him to not smoke around you for now and then help him quit with those patches.
3 :
Tell your father to stop smoking in the house and smoke outside! Inhaling cigarette smokes is far more dangerous than actually smoking one! You can also get an Air Purifying unit put in your room (ask your local electrical goods store people about this). Ask your dad for money since he's the one causing this problem.
4 :
you can't avoid it and cigarette smoking ........
5 :
try to avoid him whenever he smokes, maybe go outside when he smokes (or inside if he does it outside). Your chances aren't all that high but still you could get lung cancer from secondhand smoke.

you will probaly know when you are not breathing properly
2 :
Well chances are at your young age it is not. Do not worry yourself. See your doctor he will be delighted to reassure you.
3 :
Sometimes there are no symptoms, and the best way is to ask a doctor to do an X ray. Sometimes there will be a bad cough, back pain, and you will look generally sick. You sound like a hypochondriac, like me Your only 14, and have asthma, your probably OK, and I wouldn't worry. Lung cancer is very rare in people your age, asthma or not. There are MANY more common things that have those exact symptoms as well and are not lung cancer
4 :
yeah ususally happens when you smoke or is living in China like i used to. Symptoms are swallen lung bronchi so you would have trouble breathing. This develops slowly so you might not be able to notice it until its too late. 96 pounds is alot of weight, maybe something else like type 1 diabetes? get checked out

You don't just come down with cancer like you do the common cold..........you either have it or you don't. As for your aunt......well she's definitely harming her health with her lifestyle the way it is but whether or not she gets cancer is any ones guess really? We can't predict cos some heavy smokers do & some don't but there are other respiratory diseases such as Emphysema which she could get, not to mention stroke or heart attack. Obviously there is nobody who can talk sense into her & make her help herself hey? I feel sorry for you having to watch & not being able to do anything, so make sure you put yourself first......you are number 1 & you have to look after yourself cos unfortunately it sounds like you are fighting a losing battle with your aunt. Good luck :-)

Can you live through liver and/or lung cancer

Anybody can live trhough any type of cancer....especially if it is cought early.
2 :
You can if caught early. Not trying to be a downer here, but usually if the cancer is in 2 organs, it has metastasized from one to the other. In this case it was probably lung cancer that went to her liver. This makes it much harder to treat. Hang in there though. Anything can happen
3 :
It really depends on the type of cancer (is it an aggressive cancer or has it metastasised from another organ) as to her long term prognosis. It also depends on how early it has been caught too. My heart goes out to you and your Grandmother.
4 :
Was your grandmother a smoker? Often in lung cancer cases, it starts off in the lung, and over time it spreads, it usually spreads to the liver first, this is a sign the cancer is at a later stage which cant be good, but anything can happen, she could live another 20 years. I know your really desprete for answers at this point, it hurts... My uncle died of cancer. People get lung cancer as a result of polution and other environmental factors like exposure to asbestos. Some people will get lung cancer without any of these factors simply due to genetic predisposition. However, the vast majority of cases are caused by exposure to cigarette smoke.
2 :
lung cancer in non-smoker may be caused by Asbestos exposure, coal, radon, stress

cancer question squamous cell right lung stage 111A

cancer question squamous cell right lung stage 111A?
I have been diagnosed with squamous cell stage !!!A lung cancer I have two small cells of cancer in my right lung and one lymph node. Treatments are surgery, radiation, chemo for most people. I am considered a non surgery candidate. Therefore radiation and chemo would be my only chance. My questions are to compare length of life, quality , prognosis, with treatment and without any treatment? I have asked my Doctor, but there is an English barrier, He's from India Plyus Doctors don't know how long it takes to die without treatment, because patients against treatment don't usually go back.

Because it has spread to your lymph node, chemo is completely necessary. My Stepmother was diagnosed with lymphoma and the cancer had spread to her entire body, even the bone marrow. She went on Chemo and is alive today, 8 years later. She never even missed a day of work. You need to re-enforce your will of survival. It's key. You need to get on chemo and take your best shot at it. Chemo effects everyone differently. So you have to take that step by step, day by day. Don't be afraid. Your quality of life while your on chemo can not be measured by anyone but you. That's all I got for you. Good luck, and if you don't mind me saying, God bless.

Lung cancer is the #2 worst cancer after pancreatic. Where do you live? I am a cancer nurse who has worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. I would contact : Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center: They are the best doctors in the world and know their stuff. Even if you cannot go to Hopkins, you can call them and they will provide you with medical information. I have provided you a link: http://www.hopkinskimmelcancercenter.org/kpr/lung-cancer-links.cfm http://www.hopkinskimmelcancercenter.org/kpr/uad-meet-our-team.cfm

My 65 year old Father who smokes was told he has a large Malignancy in his lung. Does he have Cancer

My 65 year old Father who smokes was told he has a large Malignancy in his lung. Does he have Cancer?
He has not had a Biopsy yet. he had one scheduled, but he cancelled it until next week. Does this mean he officially has cancer. I read that the life expectancy for a 65 year old with lung cancer is that only 25% survive more then 1 year. I am confused. My Mom is a nurse and I would ask her, but my dad made me promise not to tell her. they are divorced.

if he hasn't had a biopsy the doctors don't know for certain that he has a malignancy, though they are pretty good at spotting them after seeing so many on xrays. Malignancy IS cancer. He has to have a biopsy tho before they can say so for sure.
2 :
My grandfather just recently passed away with lung cancer.. so i hope that this isn't the case with your father. even though im not answering your question i wish you the very best and just do everything for your father that you can and help him keep his head up no matter what.
3 :
A malignancy means it's cancer. The biopsy will tell you what kind it is and how advanced it is. I'm sorry for your father and wish him the best of luck.
4 :
Not trying to worry you or anything.. A Malignancy is a general term, it means a serious disease that is worsening/spreading. The diagnosis is brief however it is most commonly used to describe cancer. The biopsy will reveal more
5 :
Um...I would say yes it is cancer. Because I believe they separate tumors into 2 sub category's. Malignant (cancer) and Benign (non-cancerous). Tumors in the lungs of smokers tend to be more often then not malignant. I myself am a cancer survivor and when I had my biopsy they told me that it was in stage 5 and that it had already metastasized (spread) to other areas outside of the original area. Unfortunately There is a good chance that this could be a cancerous tumor. But until he has an official biopsy done and it is analyzed by a pathologist then I wouldn't jump to conclusions. I really hope your father is going to be alright. I myself am a cancer survivor and I know the horrors and confusion and pain that a diagnosis brings. I truly wish the best for you and your family.
6 :
Until the mass is biopsied, there is no way to tell if he has cancer. even if he does have cancer, each specific type of cancer (there are many forms of 'lung cancer') has has different survival rates, and different treatment options-many of which have very high survival rates, AND we are developing new techniques and treatments every day. you should know that there is no quantifiable data linking smoking to cancer, although there is quantifiable data linking milk to cancer. in fact, although the percentage americans who smoked in the US decreased by 40% between the years 1970 and 2000, the percentage of americans who were diagnosed with lung cancer increased by 52%. if anything, these statistics infer that cigarettes FIGHT cancer.
7 :
Malignant= cancerous benign= not cancerous Yes your father has lung cancer. So sorry, you should really talk to your mother even though your dad doesn't want you to know.

How early is 'early ' when it comes to detecting lung cancer

How early is 'early ' when it comes to detecting lung cancer?
5 years ago my Fiance had a malignant sarcoma tumor in his arm; he followed up with all of his regular MRI check ups except for last year. His last MRI was 2 years ago and up unit now everything seemed to be gone. On his last MRI they found a "8mm mass on his lungs". He was advised that if the cancer came back, it would come back in his lungs. Is this catching it "early"? Does this prolong prognosis? Is there risk of that the cancer has already metastasized? He is a smoker, but is in the process of quitting.
Cancer - 3 Answers

this is a secondary cancer, and has already metastasized, its a bit late on the cigs now
2 :
Oh dear… an 8mm mass on his lungs in never good news. I feel sorry for your both, especially for your fiancée…this is definitely not caching “it” early, for it is a secondary tumor, and a big one. Once you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, you must keep present you’ve become a cancer survivor for as long as you live and thus never, never, ever think or believe you are over the fence, so to speak; cancer is treacherous and, as a survivor, one must NEVER let one’s guard down. As for the prognosis, see what the doctors have to say, and make the BEST out of it.
3 :
Yes. This is early because there could not be anything earlier than this, although it has metastasized. It still can be removed.

Is there any proof BESIDES "Epidemiology" that CIGARETTES cause Lung Cancer

Is there any proof BESIDES "Epidemiology" that CIGARETTES cause Lung Cancer?
I was reading in an article that the only proof that researchers have is by linking the statistics of people who smoke and how many of them get lung cancer, does anyone know if there is any factual proof besides Epidemiological theories...? Yeah, i kind of wanted to know this as it is for coursework and ALSO.... The question was if they had proof over a microscope for example!
Cancer - 5 Answers

1 :
There are at least 60 known carcinogens in cigarette smoke. What do you consider proof? Do you have to see the cells mutate before your eyes? Over a million smokers a year die of lung cancer.
2 :
try reading this, it's quite interesting:- http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2002-10/nyum-cic101402.php Having lost my husband a fortnight ago (at the age of 58) to this horrible disease I don't care what the cause is...... As 99% of people who get Lung Cancer smoke though I'd say that's proof enough!
3 :
Since 90% of people with lung cancer are smokers what more proof do you need. The cancer causing agents in smoking are well known, and cancer is always a response to chronic irritation of tissues.
4 :
As a smoker I could fill a page defending the fact that smoking caused lung cancer but I don't have positive facts to say it doesn't, although there isn't 100% facts that says it does? My grandad died age 60 of lung cancer and never smoked, my dad had a lung removed due to lung cancer and he was a heavy smoker and recovered but 3 years later he died of bowel cancer? But to all those out there that insult smokers for our habit just stop and think of those who drive cars are putting more carcinogenic chemicals into their cars and the air from exhaust fumes? Here is some info I Googled, Lung cancer 'link to lack of sun' Lack of sunlight may increase the risk of lung cancer, a study suggests. Researchers found lung cancer rates were highest in countries furthest from the equator, where exposure to sunlight is lowest. More lung cancer in poorer areas People living in deprived areas of the East Midlands are two-and-a-half times more likely to get lung cancer than those in affluent areas, a report says. Breathing in other carcinogens in the workplace, for example asbestos, can also trigger cancer. Some people seem to be genetically predisposed to developing lung cancer. Overall tobacco smoking is estimated to be responsible for approximately 30% of cancer deaths in developed countries - How do the other 70% get lung cancer? Alcohol also causes cancers
5 :
I don't have to read anything about smoking and lung cancer. 3 of my brothers died of it. 1 a slow agonising death aged 74, one fairly quick death age 61 and the 3rd. was diagnosed and treated for sciatica for nearly 1 year, until they realised it was lung cancer. That doesn't make sense to you well, the pains he had, were similar to sciatica, and yet lung cancer had already reached the bones. He was age 54 and had stopped smoking 4+1/2 years prior. Now my 4th brother is on Oxygen day and night, and it doesn't look as though he's going to make to the end of the year. They all smoked heavily and knew the scores, but didn't stop. well not until it was too late. My last and 5th brother never smoked, age 68 and he's as fit as a 40 year old. So now why do you want statistics. this is proof. By the way I am not proud to say that I too was a smoker, but given up God willing early enough not to having to go down that road. I also have a sister, never smoked age 78 and again very healthy. I hope I haven't bored you with my family history, but if you are a smoker, give it up.

Can combination of TB and smooking cause lung cancer

Can combination of TB and smooking cause lung cancer?
if you have had tuberculosis in earlier age like tweenties and kept smooking for a long time after that is it more likely to get lung cancer than just from smooking alone, becuase as far as i know TB leaves a scarr in the lung and thats where cancer could start when older am i making sense or there is no link whatsoever?

Both can cause severe damage to your lungs and when you add the two together you get a bad result... =[
2 :
SPD WRLD- Relax! There is almost zero connection between a lung scar from TB and the cancer caused by smoking. They are different types of lung cancer. Smoking leads to the most common type = squamous cell carcinoma. Another type of lung cancer which rarely develops in an old scar is the type called adenocarcinoma. The TB scar, very common in millions of healthy people usually is found on the outer surface of a lung lobe. The smoker's cancer mainly starts in the central part of the lung in the bronchi, near the trachea. So, yes, you are making sense, and you do not have to worry that an old TB lung scar will become a lung cancer from smoking. Of course, stopping smoking is perhaps the wisest thing for you to do.
3 :
Smoking when you already have damaged lungs is always going to be a risk for lung disease. Not specifically cancer, but chronic bronchitis, emphysemia, etc. Smoking is bad for your lungs whether they have scarring or not.

Depends somewhat on where the lung cancer has spread - brain, liver, bones, adrenal glands, etc. But weight loss is very common along with progressive weakness, more and more time spent in bed, and lastly decreasing awareness and irregular breathing. Most people who die with end stage malignancies are not awake and aware at the end. This is not just the pain medications they may be taking. It is part of the cancer process and it is merciful in a way.

219,440 people with diagnoses of lung carcinomas are expected for 2009 in the U.S. 159,390 lung cancer deaths are expected in the USA for 2009. Most people with lung cancers cannot be cured. Every two years more Americans are killed by lung cancers than we lost in four years of WWII. There aren't very many people out there with "chronic" lung carcinomas. 60% of people diagnosed with either major type of lung cancer (non-small cell or small cell) are dead in 1 year. 73% are dead by 2 years. 1 in 7 people diagnosed with lung cancer survive 5 years (~15%) Most of those who are cured are cured with initial surgery - - not with chemotherapy. Male smokers - lifetime risk of lung cancer 1 in 6 Female smokers – risk of lung cancer is 1 in 9 Risk of lung cancer in non-smokers is 1 in 77 Can J Public Health. 1994 Nov-Dec;85(6):385-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7895211 Smoking does not give everyone lung cancer. Perhaps 5 out of 6 men get away with it. But it is like playing a slow form of Russian roulette. People may smoke if they must. But we usually cannot fix them if they are the ones to develop lung cancers. And the cost of treatment for lung cancers each year in the U.S. is astronomical.
2 :
I Googled this for you, read and then give your opinion about smoking causing lung cancer: The complacency non-smokers have shared over the years is no longer a viable option. Smokers and non-smokers alike are vulnerable to a disease which is largely incurable. Among patients with lung cancer, only about 14% live five years after their diagnosis. In the face of a disease that seems to have neither rhyme nor reason, what can we do to protect ourselves? First, assess your risk for lung cancer; then take measures to prevent the disease. What are the risk factors for lung cancer? Gender: Unfortunately, women seem to be more vulnerable to lung cancer. Research has shown that female smokers are more susceptible to the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarettes. In another study, a gene linked to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was found to be more active in women than in men. It did not matter whether the women smoked or not. ------------------ Can I also point out that there is more cancer causing chemical from your car exhaust fumes that seep into your car when you are driving than the chemical from cigarettes, chemicals also from industrial areas and from Radon Gas that seeps from the ground through the floor of your home that cause cancer - all new homes are being build with a tin foil lining to prevent the radon gases entering our home - this is in the UK but I presume USA is the same.

Are there any cures for lung cancer

Are there any cures for lung cancer?
I find out my grandma has lung cancer yesterday. Are there any cures for it to make it go away? & How long can she live if they treat it? She is like 80 years old btw.
Cancer - 5 Answers

1 :
There is no cure I'm afraid but there are treatments that may make it go away. The reason they don't call them cures is because sometimes after the treatment the cancer comes back but that's not the case for everyone. Cancer is a very complicated illness and there's no way to tell how long she'll live without knowing what stage she's in, what her general health is and how treatable the cancer is. I know you're probably very worried about this but you need to talk to her and see what her doctor said to her about it...that's the only way you're going to get some really accurate information. You could try calling her doctor and he or she could probably give you some general information but the doctor won't be able to go into detail unless your grandmother gives him or her permission to tell you everything.
2 :
Hello, I'm very sorry but they're right there is no sure there's only treatments
3 :
yes cannabis oil cures even terminal lung cancer
4 :
no cures yet but they are looking for one check out these research groups http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ http://folding.stanford.edu/
5 :
There are many variables when it comes to lung cancer treatments and the type of lung cancer. Small cell grows and spreads rapidly, but responds well to treatment. Non Small Cell is a bit slower in growing but often does not respond well to chemo. If the tumor is localized, they may want to do surgery to remove the tumor, or perhaps the infected lobe. Survival rate depends on each individual, some people last years, others less than a year.

My mom has lung cancer, how long does she have to live

My mom has lung cancer, how long does she have to live?
Hello, my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer last night. We're not sure what stage it's at yet but how long do you think she'll have to live? Is there any chance she can live through it and be ok in the end? I've been doing some research but I cant find any answers. She's been smoking for 40 years so thats a main factor.

There's a chance she can live through it I think, don't lose hope.
2 :
I know someone who was diagnosed with lung cancer, given 6 months to live and is healthy like 4 years later. I don't think you can really know. My boyfriend's mother had stage 4 cancer this past year as well. It looks like she is getting better. I really was in aw of him dealing so well with the situation and being so strong and caring for her. Tough situation.
3 :
Her doctor will set her up an appointment with an oncologist. If she hasn't had a biopsy or surgery yet there is no way to tell what type or stage the cancer is. After knowing that information the doctor will recommend treatment. There are many women today who survive breast cancer. Don't give up hope.
4 :
a week to many years....you don't know. there is no set answer, especially when she hasn't received any more news, or details. see what smoking does? she could live a few months, depending on the stage she's in, or years. she needs treatments, and to stop smoking. i hope you get checked as well. 2nd hand smoke kills as well...
5 :
It depends on what type of cancer - small cell carcinoma, oat cell carcinoma, large cell carcinoma. Small cell is the most deadly. It also depends on the extent of the cancer, is it a small tumor or spread throughout the lungs and whether this is the primary site or if this is a site of metastasis. She should have CT scans of her entire body to rule out other sites. There are some great treatments for cancer these days and it is not always a death sentance anymore. I have melanoma (skin cancer) that metastasized to two organs and was told that I would not live more than 6 months but it has been 5 years. She needs to get as much information as she can, see a specialist that deals with her specific type of cancer, and keep her thoughts positive. You also need to be positive and supportive. Ask the doctors as many questions as you can to get as much information about her cancer as possible including prognosis, treatment options, and aslo ask about any clinical trials.
6 :
It depends on what stage she's at. If she's stage 1 her changes are pretty good, the further the stage the less chance she has, I just found out this information yesterday. As I too have lung cancer, another factor is what type she has. small cell lung cancer is worse than non small cell lung cancer. I hope this helps you, all of these things can be discussed with the oncologist she's seeing. For most of us the goal is 5 years. If she can make it cancer free 5 years she's considered healed. It will also depend on if her cancer is operable. Mine isn't. I've gone through 7 weeks of radiation, one full round of chemo, while my tumor has shrunk I still have it, so we're starting back on a stronger chemo treatment. I will pray for both of you, God bless.
7 :
I am so sorry to hear about your mothers diagnosis. Lung cancer is very difficult to cure but.... her long term prognosis will depend on the type, stage and location of her cancer. Treatment options vary. My mother has lung cancer that is non curable and is being managed. The doctors gave her six months to a year- which was based on averages for individuals with this particular type and stage of cancer. It has been 10 months since the diagnosis. There is so much information available on the internet do a google search for lung cancer , check out the american cancer association, also major hospital web sites such as Mayo Clinic provide a abundance of information. My mother has the best care in the world- The Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She is taking a drug called tarceba that only works on 10 percent of the cases. She has stabalized and our family plans to vacation in Florida in a few weeks. You will need to be as supportive as possible on this most difficult journey. Do not dwell on the fact that your mother smoked it will not help her now. My mother never smoked. Also, take care of yourself and consider joining a support group. Take Care
8 :
Greg, There is no good answer for you. If your mom was just diagnosed last night, generally the next thing to do is called staging. They will do testing to determine if the cancer is spread, what type it is etc. The will generally assign it a number value of 1 to 4. 1 is great, and rarely used and 4 is pretty bad, but not a death sentence. Some things to keep in mind along this difficult journey. When you ask things like how long, etc., the docs can only give you averages and they will all be able to tell you that they have seen patients that staged like your mom that died in a few weeks or 10 years. My mom had ovarian cancer, stage 3+ they only gave her 18 months, she died 10 years later from something that had nothing to do with the cancer. Take one day at a time, the future isn't real, all any of us really has has is right here and right now. I was 24 when my mom was diagnosed and 34 when she died and I cherished every one of those 3,000 plus days. She saw me get married and her knew first grand child, she missed her 2nd & 3rd grand kids and my brothers marriage at least in this world, but she was so very happy to have been at my wedding and to hold and sing to her grandson. Don't be afraid to ask for second opinions. The whole family needs to keep talking, but choose your words carefully you may not have the oportunity to speak your mind again but equally you may not have time to take your words back. If you have a faith, it's time to embrace it if you haven't been. Faith is a force that will help you, your mom, and your family along this journey. Don't judge your family too much, support each other even if you disagree, it will be dificult for everyone regardless of the outcome.

Mom has a very good chance to fight cancer with pranayam. She needs a strong determination to get better. This is the free treatment for cancer patients.Do it and you will know from the future test results. You can also do it alongside any medical treatment. Cancer hates oxygen and cannot live in a high-oxygen environment. If you want to supplement the medical treatment you receive(or not receive) with some alternative therapy then this is for you. You need to help your body to build up your immune system. The breathing exercises - pranayam is a holistic approach creating extra oxygen supply in the body and will slowly help with the health problem.Do the pranayam to see the benefits.Build up your timing slowly and after four weeks at the suggested maximum duration you will start to notice benefits gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume later. What is known: pranayam helps the body heal itself. How it works in the body is not known – but people may build their own theory. You have to do it yourself for your benefit. The small print: Keep doing pranayam after you are better for minimum 30 minutes a day for rest of life to maintain health. People who have been treated successfully, should do pranayam as well, as there is a chance of recurrence. The pranayam techniques: Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes. Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently. Anulom Vilom - Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril then -keeping the left nostril closed deep breath-in through right nostril then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril. This is one cycle of anulom vilom. Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day). You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed. Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee. Duration : 5 to 10 times Only by doing you will benefit and will feel good that you can do something to help the body.Copy and print this to improve your technique and stay focused. This is simplified pranayam for everyone and you do not have to go to classes to learn. This is for life, unlike short term classes where you do it in the class then stop when classes are over.

My mom is still alive today and has not had one reoccurence with cancer!! I knock on wood everyday...My mother is very lucky and in good health. My mom had also smoked her whole life up until that point. Just remember..everybody is different. Your moms oncologists and surgeon will know more.. and they will do the best they can to help her... Im not going to lie..your mom has a tough road in front of her if she is facing surgery and chemo...but if she is strong willed and has lots of support she will get through this! :) Good luck...keep us updated.

My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer March 20th 2006. He had no symptoms but thought he hurt his back at work. By the time it was diagnosed(within 2 days of the back ache) the cancer was everywhere. No surgery. Thee is a better chance of survival if they can operate. He went thru chemo, radiation, gamma knife procedure(brain tumor) and took a drug called tarceva. Tarceva is very expensive but it has has good results you may want to ask the doctor about it. Sadly, my love passed June 6th 2006. In the meantime do whatever she wants to do, go whereever she wants to go eat what she want to eat and have get togethers with family and friends and take lots of pictures . Good luck to you.
