There is no set time. Some people who never smoke get it. Some people who are only exposed to secondhand smoke get it. Some people who smoke a long time don't get it. The longer one smokes, the worst the effects on lungs, heart, mouth, esophagus, throat, circulatory system, etc. Quit as soon as you can. Each year smoking now takes one off the end of your life.

It can happen fairly soon, or it can take a longer while. Don't take a chance -- stop now.

Smoking only raises you chances of getting lung cancer. It does not mean you WILL get it. My granddad smoked for nearly sixty years before stopping and is still in good health.

Depends on the person. Some people can smoke for decades and not get cancer; others can smoke less than 10 years and get it. It depends on your genetic makeup and how much you smoke.

It certainly depends on a lot of things. Recently, my uncle died at the age of 50 from lung cancer, but we were quite surprised he lasted that long, because usually, people who start smoking early in life, say 12 - 16 years of age, are more likely to give in to the illness by their 40s or even before that. This of course very sad, because about 80 percent of teenagers both smoke and drink today, yet very few parents know about this. Anyway, going back to your question, a person will live about 10 to 30 years without getting the disease, but you should be aware that the younger a person is, the easier for that person to get the cancer. Of course, there are people who have been smoking their entire life and only died in their 70s and 80s but these are rare. The opposite can also be true, which is that some people will unfortunately die within their first five years use. My father, who's 48, is two packs a day, sometimes three, and I really worry about him. Moreover, the amount of cigarettes smoked plays a role, but most people will smoke from one to four packs per day, which is enough to kill you. Beside from all the negative helth issues that smoking gives to human body, I'd say that it is also a very bad thing otherwise. For example, people who smoke tend to be labeled as "bad", while you might lose respect from some friends. Another bad thing is the fact that smoke creates adiction, so when you need it, you gotta take it. Basically, you're not independent anymore, because smoke has your life! Besides, smoke isn't really condidered lady-like, mainly because men used to smoke when the joined the army, got into jail, etc. Furtheremore, smoke affects women more than men, since their body is less developed. To have a recap, a person is likely to get the cancer is an average of 13.7 years, with the teenagers being more vunerable.

For some perspective, you should probably ask this question of someone who has lung cancer. It really isn't worth the risk!
