What is the survival rate for Lung Cancer

What is the survival rate for Lung Cancer?
Someone in my family is about to diagnosed with lung cancer, and I'm really worried about it. I probably shouldn't ask this as I'm only scaring myself more, but I'm also really curious as to how good the success of surival is, in case I shouldn't be panicking.

Im not sure but I will pass on some important research in the below link. Its a mineral that has been very successful in treatment of cancers
2 :
It depends how long the tumor has been there or how big the tumor is. My aunt had lung cancer but didn't find out right away, it was too late an it had already travelled to her brian :'(. She died not even a year later. Don't stress it too much, there are websites you can go on to read more about lung cancer. Just remember, whatever happens, happens for a reason! God bless you and your family! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
3 :
Each individual has their own cancer and treatment is tailored around that. No- one can give you an exact time as it really depends on what type of cancer and if their is spread or not. Good luck, I know easier said than done but try not to worry.
4 :
The previous answerer is correct. An INDIVIDUAL's survival is dependent on a lot of factors, including the patient's overall health, the type of lung cancer (there are different types, some better than others, how far spread the cancer is when found, and the treatment choices made). The AVERAGE survival statistics lump in everyone. It is important that you treat any patient of any disease as an individual because to get those average statistics, someone has to be at the top of the survival curve. Every patients should be treated as if they are going to be in the top! Here is a link to the National Cancer Institute's comprehensive information about lung cancers. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/lung

Living for how long? It isn’t black or white, living or dead. It’s based on the type of cancer, the stage, if it’s operable and if it is resectable. About 50% with resectable disease survive 5 years.

How much does your chance for lung cancer go up per ciggarate you smoke, brand matter

How much does your chance for lung cancer go up per ciggarate you smoke, brand matter?
I smoke 5-8 paralament lights per day, how much would my cances for contracting lung cancer go up if i started to smoke 10? 15? or decreased to 5? 3?. Is there a % value for the increased risk per ciggarate daily? If i switched to my alternate brand Nat Sherman lights, would that help to decrease my risk. I plan to quit when I hit summer vacation in May, but for now I wish to limit my risk. I dont know if total time being a smoker matters; but I have been smoking for 2 years now. 1.5 of those years paralament light, .2 benson and hedges light, and .3 Nat Sherman light. Thanks.

No matter what you are getting about a cup of tar in your lungs every year from smoking. You need to stop to decrease your chances of getting lung cancer. smoking less isn't going to help you in the long run.
2 :
You really need to stop all together to make any difference. Finding rationalizations and excuses isn't helping. I quit a few years ago, and it was really hard, but so worth it! I found the answer was to find the will power deep down and go for it. YOU CAN DO IT TOO!
3 :
If u are trying to break it down into percentages of a chance of getting cancer...u are hooked already...any smoke going in your body will give u cancer....its just a matter of time.... it could be 1 year it could be 40 ....u need to quit and get away from basically injecting a slow death into your body as soon as u can. I know...I smoked for 10 years but quit 2 years ago and I feel sooo much better now
4 :
It is depends on your DNA structure there of many people that hasn't smoke and ended up dying of lung cancer, just like there are many people who Smoke unflitters cigs when their are in their late 80's. I really don't think that its any special cig that would be better for you. I would just quit. Your body can fix it self now when your still young.
5 :
my grandpa didnt die of lung cancer he died when he was 72 yrs old he smoked since probably around 16 or so ...my dad died of lung cancer he would have been 61 yrs old smokin since he was probably in his teens...My dads mom had cancer, my aunt had cancer. I guess it also depends if it runs in your family...you have a higher % OF GETTING IT. Lights dont matter..there is twice as much nicotine and the bad stuff...they just put a heavy filter on it that way it feels like your not smoking anything so you'll end up smoking twice as much
6 :
there is no scale for this. it is well known that the more you smoke, the more you are prone, even if you are smoking....whatever

Is skin cancer as "deadly" as lung cancer and so many other types of cancers

Is skin cancer as "deadly" as lung cancer and so many other types of cancers?
My grandma just died of lung cancer just 2 weeks ago. My mom has had skin cancer removed 8x's now. Is skin cancer more "removable" than other cancers are?
Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
It depends on which type of skin cancer, some are harmless and benign, others can escape into the blood stream and start growing in other vital organs. but i'd say the worst type of skin cancer is more aggresive and harder to treat than the worst type of lung cancer. And again how removable it is depends on the type.
2 :
No cancer is harmless or benign – benign means non-cancerous. Skin cancer can be as deadly as lung cancer. It depends on the type of cancer you are referring to and the stage of those cancers. I guess you could say skin cancer is more “removable than others since it is on the skin it is easier to remove. However, any cancer that has spread is usualloy not removable.
3 :
Well, one of the reasons lung cancer can be more dangerous than other cancers is because it is insidious, and unlike skin or breast tumors, it gives no external visible sign. Lung cancer is often already well developed by the time it is suspected or diagnosed.

My feces looked normal while I had lung cancer. Since March 0f 2005, when I was diagnosed, and then June of 2005, when they took my left lung out, until now, the appearence hasn't changed. I hope this helps, and I hope you are cancer free. Good luck.

Has there been discovered a cure for lung cancer?
Can people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer be cured and live? People have survived breast cancer can the same apply for lung cancer?

People who have been diagnosed with Lung Cancer can live and go into remission. They can also be healed- if you believe in that. However, there is yet to be a 'cure' for Lung Cancer. Meaning there is no official treatment that ensure people who are diagnosed with Lung Cancer will live. I personally go with prayer.

Nope. THAT's Why when you start Smoking- Your days are Numbered... :(

Hi, i know how you feel... Cause i am also experiencing it now. To answer your questions, you can consider taking the same treatment my mother is going through now, which is chemo. My mum is also diagnosed with lung cancer, but wasn't unsure of the stages my mum lung cancer is at now, as my doctor say nothing about it. My mum's doctor actually recommended my mum to take a medicine call "Gefitinib", which is also a medicine for cancer. The effect the medicine produces is not very efficient, but you can ask the doctor about this medicine, whether is it useful for you dad. As for my mum, the medicine is not useful and not taking any effect. Therefore my mum's doctor decided to take the "only" medicine for cancer, Chemo. Until now, i believe there is still no cure for cancer, only suppress and kills the cancer cells. But from what i know, if after the Chemo, and say to have killed all the cancer cells, the patients also have to wait for another 5 years, to make sure there he/she is completely recovered from cancer, before he/she is declared "Recovered" Even there is cure for cancer beside Chemo, only the riches of the riches... can afford such a medicine, and it is a mystery to everyone.

I hate to tell you this, but I have worked in a hospital AND i have had family members with terminal illnesses (including lung cancer) and I firmly believe in honesty. Lung cancer is always fatal, you can look it up but thus far the longest anyone has survived after diagnosis is about 5 years. You have options, your fathers physicians will most likely suggest chemo or radiation or a combination of the two, this will shrink the tumor and hopefully give your father longer to live. If you are not satisfied with this, you can try experimental treatments (tcm clinics in China, stem cell treatment in singapore, etc). However I think your best bet right now would be to go to a major cancer treatment center, like sloan kettering or the mayo clinic and see what they say. they will have the latest treatments. Lastly my experience working at a hospital taught me this. Don't let the doctors be the end all of your information source. There are SO SO SO many alternative treatments that have worked. And while they may not be the cure, they can help. Do research, even diet and exercise can help. There are multiple sclerosis patients who have remained symptom free and able to live a normal life (I wont say cured because there are so many restrictions) because of something called the best bet diet. There are lupus patients who have had success eating seaweed and doing tai-chi. My grand-mother survived with lung cancer for two years post diagnosis when every doctor she met said she had one at the most. I wish you the best, I can't imagine how painful this must be for you. Remember, RESEARCH, look around, the doctors do not know everything.

I had an aunt who had cancer a few years ago, I'm not sure what kind but she found out about a drug called Sodium Phenylbutryate, that Doctor Burzynski, in Houston Texas has been curing all types of cancer with for years now. My Aunt went and saw him and is now cancer free and feeling great....look into this, just type in his name, Dr.Burzynski on the internet and he has a huge website that you can look at, as well as phone numbers you can phone for more information. If he helped my Aunt im sure he can help your Father....Good Luck!
4 :
Stage 3A is best treated by either 4 cycles of cheotherapy (ciplatin doublet) followed by Radiotherapy or Concurrent radiotherapy and Chemotherapy (both chemo and RT given together) geftinib is not for the patient alone...however if he was a NEVER SMOKER it may benefit with chemotherapy but not alone upfront
5 :
If you do not know, Cancer Cells are not alien cells ingested into the body. It is actually our own cells mutated and turns bad. There are many Natural Cancer Treatment that you can effectively used to combat the cancer cells

can any form of Lung Cancer be contageous or genetic

can any form of Lung Cancer be contageous or genetic?
I have lost 2 sisters in the last 2 years to lung cancer, I also have lung problems as they did for a few years before their death. Makes you wonder.

1 :
Cancer is not contagious but many types are genetic. Discuss your concerns with your doctor. That is the only way you will get any good information.
2 :
Contagious Cancer is a common misconception. You cannot get cancer from someone else in such a form as like in a contagious disease. However, at least 94% of all cancers are genetic.
3 :
Sorry to hear about your sisters. No, cancer isn't contagious. Fewer than 10% of all cancers are genetic; lung cancer is no exception. Cancer Research UK says that If you have a first degree relative (parent, sibling) with lung cancer, your risk of lung cancer is doubled, but that it's is very hard to sort out the facts, because of the major role of smoking in lung cancer. Families of smokers will all be exposed to cigarette smoke and so have an increased risk of lung cancer whether they have inherited a faulty gene or not. After smoking, age is the greatest risk factor for lung cancer - three-quarters of lung cancer deaths occur in people over 65.
