Is there cold hard proof that smoking causes lung cancer

Is there cold hard proof that smoking causes lung cancer?
I recently quit smoking and am trying to get my girlfriend to follow suit. During a spirited discussion recently she said she wasn't convinced that smoking causes lung cancer as there was no hard proof of it. Is she right?

You can try asking my grandmothers, my gradfather, and my aunt. Oh wait - they are all DEAD due to smoking! (BTY - good for you for quitting!)
2 :
Just google lung cancer and you will see for yourself the causes of it.I will tell you that smokers get what is called small cell or oat cell cancer and it is a bad way to go.The data is out there!!!!

She is absolutely 100% wrong. The type of lung cancer that smokers get was rare until smoking became common. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lung_cancer Even the tobacco companies no longer claim that there is no link between smoking and cancer. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=57836 You can find people who assert there is no such connection, just as you can find contrarians on all positions, and of course there are people who smoke and don't get cancer. Some people claim that tobacco is the most addictive substance in the world. I don't know if that's true, but I know that tobacco companies have altered certain brands of cigarettes so that smokers are essentially free-basing nicotine. http://www.usdoj.gov/civil/cases/tobacco2/01_20040913%20Written%20Direct%20Testimony%20David%20Kessler.pdf The truth is your gf doesn't want to give it up.

There is definately a link between smoking and lung cancer. Scientifically however, you can't absolutely prove it until other potential causes are removed from the environment. Other things have been linked to lung cancer too. It's not that I believe that smoking is healthy or a smart thing to do, I just believe that ABSOLUTE proof doesn't exist yet.

My father died of lung cancer. He was a smoker.aged 64years old. The question his macmillan nurse asked us and also the nurses at the hospise where he died was....Was his cancer linked to his smoking because there are 7 kinds of lung cancer and only ONE of them is the result of smoking?????? Others are asbestosis, working in a mine, cronic bronchitusis, COPD,..etc.. Not all are linked to smoking. Make your own quess....but smoking is bad for you, some live some die. The neighbour who died at 102years old gave up smoking at 99years old because he kept falling asleep and was scared of setting himself on fire.?????

She is right. Cigarette smoke contains many carcinogens. Carcinogens have the potential to cause cancer by possibly mutating genes. This means the risk is greater with more exposure to carcinogens like cigarette smoke but, does not gurantee it. Statistics at many websites illustrate the greater risk of many diseases when smoking. (Cancer not just lung, heart disease, etc.)

If I quit smoking 13 years ago, I'm 53, what are the chances I will still get lung cancer

If I quit smoking 13 years ago, I'm 53, what are the chances I will still get lung cancer?
My father quit in his 30's, and in his late 60's he still contracted lung cancer.

Statiscally, a person who smokers for 30 years or more, has about a 1 in 7 chance on getting lung cancer. Thats about all the info I can give you. Since you quit at 40, odds are you didnt smoke for 30 years, so your chances are probably less.
2 :
Smoking IS NOT the only cause of lung cancer. And I bet your father had lung cancer for a while before they caught it. You still might get it, maybe because you poisoned yourself for a majority of your life, or maybe because you've been exposed to other factors.

Is there a cure for lung cancer

Is there a cure for lung cancer?
A relative of mine just found out that he has lung cancer, he is in his 40's. I don't really know anyone who has had lung cancer, so I was wondering how people deal with this cancer and if there is a cure?

Avoid inhaling dust, wood, particle or cement dust, and of course, never smoke cigarettes. Mucus forming drinks, like cow milk must be avoided, I have seen remarkable results changing to goat milk, which does not clog up the cells, as cow milk does. The main thing is to get plenty of oxygen, building up a walking program, maybe taking up weights or some physical exercise, and breathing country air, or being outdoors in the garden, around plenty of plants can help. Some people use an ioniser, which improves the air quality, apparently a not too hot shower daily, also releases negative ions which are beneficial to ones lungs, which can regenerate with the right TLC. All the best for your relative.Nvrgvup

No, sadly there is no cure for lung cancer. If caught early enough, surgery can remove part of the lung or the whole lung. Chemo often puts us in a stable condition for months, sometimes years.
3 :
there is hope and a cure for lung cancer that most doctors don't know about or even use they are both simple treatments read more about them below.

My lungs hurt, do you think I have lung cancer

My lungs hurt, do you think I have lung cancer?
I smoke about a pack of Newports a day, and Im 23. My lungs have been hurting the past couple days...so I havent smoked in about 3 days. They feel better now that I havent been smoking. Is this a sign of lung cancer? I dont really cough either, just the lungs hurting.

It is extremely unlikely that you would have developed lung cancer by age 23. I think the fact that you are inhaling shards of fiberglass, tar, carbon monoxide, etc. into your lungs might be painful in and of itself after a while though.
2 :
your not going to get a serious prognosis in answers.yahoo.com. you need a x-ray for your question or an MRI

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear that. What you can do is get lots of friends and family together and do a big car wash! Before you do it, maybe consider advertising it in your local paper and call your local TV stations and Radio stations! They might be more than happy to mention it and explain your situation. You should also consider setting a bank account up at a local branch that can receive donations from those that can't make it to your car wash. Try to mention that to your local TV station as well.

My thoughts on cancer are as under. It does not seem to be having any side effects. Give it shot and save the world. The least it can do for you as per previous experiments are - complete relief from pain, better handling of chemo after effects. Our body becomes acidic because of wrong eating and resting habits. That causes body to store more water to ward off the bad effects of acid accumulation along with FAT and other minerals. These things though stored in the body can not be used because it is stored in much bigger sizes then the sizes that can be used by the body. So prevention should include making our body alkaline. Getting rid of excess stored water and then Getting rid of excess acids. Dehydration - When we drink water with meals or within 3-4 hours of a meal the stomach acids and toxins move from our blood to our body (cells of body outside blood system). This causes more water to be retained for managing those acids and toxins in cells (outside blood system) and we are continuously in the state of shortage of water. So even if we are drinking sufficient water we may be in dehydration mode. Since the blood acids levels are also on the higher side (due to shortage of water in the blood system) the kidneys will not be able to remove the toxins and acids efficiently. Over a period of time this will damage the kidneys as well. Hydration - When we drink water 30 minutes before meals movement of acids and toxins from blood to our body (outside blood system) stops. So the blood acid levels improve (become low - still on the higher side of the range) and there are more nutrients available in the blood system. This excess of acids and toxins in the blood system are removed from our blood by kidneys. Overhydration - When we keep on drinking water before the meals the blood acids drop to a level that kidneys stop removing the acids and toxins from our blood. Because of low blood acid levels the metabolism drops to very low levels. The kidneys does the removal job only if blood acids are in a particular range. This causes the water retention in the body. This also causes the cells death resulting from excess water. Excess cell death would eventually result in very yellow urine. The undermentioned routine aims at detoxification. It makes sure that toxins move from outside the blood system to blood system and from there outside the body thru kidneys. First 9 Glasses of water (all before meals) improves the blood acids levels (the blood acids levels are brought in the range which is best for kidney functioning). The movement of toxins and acids from blood system to our body (outside blood system) stops during this phase. Before the blood acids levels drop very low (when kidney functioning is impaired again) we reduce our water intake. In the second phase we try to get, the stores of the toxins stored in the body, in our blood system. Reducing water intake helps in that. In the third phase we increase blood acid levels to very level. This causes movement of toxins from our body (outside blood system) to blood system. In the next phase we again increase our water levels so that removal of acids from blood out of body thru kidney is more more efficient. To get relief follow the undermentioned routine. Do not sleep for at least 3 hours after a meal. This is most important. This is to ensure that we do not cause movement of toxins from our blood to our body (outside our blood system). This also helps in better repair of our body during sleep. 1. First 2 days Drink 3 glasses of water before each meal. So total should be 9 glasses a day. Stop all other liquids. For example if you take lunch at 2.00 pm, take 1 glass each at 12.30, 1.00 and 1.30 pm. Some deviations from suggested times are ok. Do not drink water after 7 PM. 2. Next 7 days Reduce water intake to 6 glasses day. 2 Glasses before each meal. 3. Next 2 days Reduce water intake to 3 glasses day. 1 Glasses before each meal. 4. Next 2 days Drink 1 glass of water in the entire day. 5. Next Repeat 1,2,3 and 4.

is little blood with coughing mucus means lung cancer

is little blood with coughing mucus means lung cancer?
it happened twice last night then it was gone. had little blood coming out yesterday in my saliva and it happened again before going to bed, there was little blood after i coughed mucus. does that necessarily means lung cancer or it could be something else? btw it happened just one time before, five months ago . what that could be?

It doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer. It could be indicative of something serious, though, and you need to get it check out. Have you been doing a lot of coughing? If so, it may just be that you have damaged your throat...I would still get it checked though.
2 :
i had the same problem when i coughed blood up in my mucus. the 1st time i had bronchitis and the 2nd time i had a sinus infection. maybe you need to see a doctor to make sure whats going on. if its a little then its probably nothing but if its like your throwing up blood its time to see a doc lol.
3 :
Get a few test run by a Pulmonologist a specialist in Respiratory problems! Good Luck!

What is the chance of developing lung cancer, emphazema, blood clots from smoking

What is the chance of developing lung cancer, emphazema, blood clots from smoking?
I know plenty of older people that have been smoking for decades and not one of them have developed any type of cancer. What's the percentage of developing a disease from smoking? Is it >50%? Is it <1%? Where is the science in it all? Sources please... Can it just be a scare tactic? Is developing cancer because of smoking a rare condition that's been over exaggerated? What's the deal I really want to know...

How does lung cancer spread to the hip

How does lung cancer spread to the hip?
Dad had part of his lung removed when they found a tumor. Now, 6 months later, they say some cancerous cells have moved to his hip, and begun to grow on the bone. How can this happen?
Cancer - 7 Answers

1 :
Cancer cells can spread to all parts of our body if left uncontrolled. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy should kill all cancer cells, but if it is at a later stage like stage 3-4, then it's hard to stop it's spread.
2 :
There may have been cancer cells in other parts of his body already, so when they removed his lung it didn't get all the cancer cells. They can't always find all the cells on tests if they are still developing and have not formed into tumors and such yet.
3 :
Cancer can spread very quickly. Just be there to support him and pray for him.
4 :
yes my ancle had lung cancer and it spread out to his whole bones and body...i feel sorry for ur dad..bless his heart and hope to heal up soon
5 :
Blood Stream probably.
6 :
cancer grows and spreads. thats the bad part. it also goes away sometimes temporarily, other times permanently. thats the good part. pray and put it all in God's hands...the good and the bad. good luck! I'll pray for your dad. My dad had cancer too. Emphasis on had.
7 :
Any cancer spreads by 3 routes- blood, direct invasion & through lymph. Here blood-borne route seems possible. Also, if the tumor would've crossed the diaphragm (a band of muscles separating lungs from the abdomen) it can reach a muscle called the iliopsoas, which connects the lower vertebral column to the thigh bone that forms the hip joint (greater trochanter of femur). This is another route I can think of. If the spread is lymphatic, generally there'd be enlarged lymph nodes.
