What's the average age that smokers get lung cancer

What's the average age that smokers get lung cancer?
If you started smoking at the age of 20.....what's the average age that you would get lung cancer at? (For men).

My mom started smoking when she was 18. At 62 she was diagnosed, and 12 weeks later, she was dead. TX Mom
2 :
there is no average age. it depends on many factors(i.e. family history, how much you smoke, etc). some people are more susceptible than other. some people get other diseases and some are never effected.
3 :
that is a difficult question to answer. VERY difficult. how often? how many cigarettes a day? is the person also overweight? drink alcohol, too? eat a lot of fast food? does the person have health insurance? there are lots of factors before giving an average age for developing lung cancer. other symptoms and things tend to pop up first. like a chronic cough and wheezing. that happens fairly soon after you first start. but the cough gets worse over the years. you would develop COPD (emphysema) first after 20-30 years of smoking. however, with that said, i have had plenty of male and female patients in their 20s and 30s with lung cancer and tongue cancer from smoking and dipping. they started smoking when they were 12 or 13. it is sad watching a young person die from lung cancer from smoking. very very sad.

lung cancer how long before symptoms show

lung cancer how long before symptoms show?
my dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer end of feb 08. symptoms started begining of february. he was paraplegic and ex smoker gave up 4 years ago. he also had heart attack end of august 07. some say that cancer is dormant before it forms a tumor and my question is do you think cancer was there before the heart attack or did heart attack change something for the cancer to start.

wen you keep farting and sharting.
2 :
*Smoking *Toxic chemicals *Environmental pollution *Family history (gives you a slight risk) Lung cancer depends upon the person.
3 :
Lung cancer can be both slow growing and fast growing. He can ask the pathologist since most tumors have a specific growth range. Many people have no indication of lung cancer until it actually impairs their breathing, which is often quite advanced. That is why treatment isn't always that successful. So sorry that he is sick! My Dad is currently quite ill as well. It's tough because he just can't do what he wants to do.
4 :
You can have lung cancer for years and years and not know as by the time the symptoms start its malignant. It wouldn't have been dormant but it could have been benign and then become more agressive as it grew. The heart attack wouldn't have encouraged the cancer. As its just when the coronary artery becomces obstructed and the heart gets starved of oxygen causeing it to become damaged or parts of it to die. I don't know weather this could also starve the body of oxygen also, but if it did, that could have slowed the cancers growth. if the cancer is in the lungs close to the heart, it could be that the cancerous growth was pressing on the heart causing an obstruction of sorts. 'this isn't fact' this is based on my knowlage.
5 :
Small cell lung cancer is very aggressive and grows quickly. I don't know of any cancer that lays dormant, but some cancers are very slow growing. Cancer can develop years before symptoms are discovered but in the case of small cell its not likely. As far as the heart attack goes, its difficult to say but I am sure they would have done xrays and scans when he had the heart problem, if the cancer was there at that time, they likely would have seen it. Just to add to this a bit.. chemo is often quite effective against small cell.. not to give false hope but if treated aggressively it could add time onto his prognosis.

here is a research group with a message board someone there might know http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/
7 :
feb of 07 i had spots on my lung,i also had breast cancer,in dec on my next ct scan the spots had grown in to a tumour,i had no symptons and the tumour is not connected to the breast cancer,i think it was there before the heartattack hun

srry to hear that. i lost both parents to it dad's was caught early and had the treatment got very sick then recovered and lived 3yrs. 2 1/2 yrs he was ok in remission then came back second treatment gave him heart attack he never recovered, He opted against medical advice for a last ditch treatment which likely killed him a few weeks earlier; Mom's "Dr" had his head up his ass and she went months wo diagnosis. It was finally caught by accident by another dr who saw something on the edge of xray. That moron finally realised was not a nerve disorder and ordered the wrong tests his nurse then lost the results more bureacracy more delays cancer spreading finally treatment starts it was rough. Mom with coaching from the so called professionals gave up and was allowed to starve to death. my friends and family pressured me not to take legal action and respect her wishes. I will never know if it was right thing to do Sorry for ramble to answer ur question mom lasted bout 6 weeks after spread to brain but she would have had months if the feeding was done. Maybe years if had been treated properly that Dr and others who caused this are alive because i promised mom i would be ok and that does not include prison or worse

I wonder why diaphoresis can be the symptom of lung cancer. Lung cancer patient makes too much sweat?? If so, could you explain the reason to me?

Many cancers can cause night sweats. It is one of the "B symptoms" along with fatigue and weight loss. I don't know if diaphoresis is specific to lung cancer unless the patient is struggling to breath and the effort is causing the diaphoresis.

Does microwave popcorn give you lung cancer

Popcorn can give you cancer but only if you eat it everyday right? Its ok to eat it once in a while right?

2 :
I NEVER HEARD OF POPCORN GIVING U CANCER. BUT EVERYTHING IN MODERATION........ I HOPE U AIN'T ACTING STUPID AND EATING POPCORN EVERYDAY...................... BUT ANYWAYS CHILL IF U DO AND BE MERRY.
3 :
this was just in the news. it's not cancer, but another lung disease caused by a flavor additive in microwave popcorn. it's only a danger if you inhale the steam of freshly popped bags when you open them and if you have multiple bags of popcorn per day. if you're worried about it, let the bag cool before opening it or pour it into a bowl, avoiding the fumes.
4 :
no if you open the bag directly towards your face, the fumes from the glue can cause cancer
5 :
There is no scientific documented evidence that popcorn microwaved or not causes lung or any other type of cancer. The warning that you heard about was based on opening bags of popcorn, inhaling the fumes, and developing a lung condition. All the warning was based on was one person who seems to have had some type of reaction. Eat as much of it as you want and if you have a lung condition already . . just don't inhale the fumes from the popcorn bag.
6 :
did you read the whole story? that guy ate about 3-4 bags of popcorn everyday for about 10 years and he always inhaled deeply when it first came out. anything as excessive as that would be bad for you.
7 :
It is not cancer. It's called popcorn lung. Prolong exposure to the steam coming out of a just popped bag is bad for your lungs. Visit this link for more information.
8 :
Glenn Evers, a former DuPont Co. engineer, has accused the chemical giant of deliberately ignoring evidence that its grease-resistant coating on paper products may have been entering consumers' blood at high levels. PFOA Evers first became concerned about the health effects of a perfluorinated chemical used for food packaging in 1987, when company tests showed it was dissolving into wet paper at much higher levels than the FDA had approved. When the paper coating is dissolved and absorbed into the human body, it breaks down into perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a likely carcinogen. DuPont has denied Evers's allegations, The FDA will also soon decide how much to fine DuPont for failing to report for more than 20 years' possible health effects associated with PFOA. Millions of Bags of Popcorn, meanwhile........
9 :
Microwaves are dangerous. They nuke the nutrients right out of your for. There are dangerous levels of radiation. They melt dangerous chemicals into the food you eat,so i`d say yea,if you use them alot.
10 :
It looks like the story is true, Factory workers in plants that produce microwave popcorn are showing ill effects from the fumes. There is ONE case where a consumer, eating several bags a day, every day, has come down with the same type of illness. To answer you question, "is it safe once in a while", yes it is safe. Just don't breath in the fumes right after popping. TMD Links below, Associated Press and A Google search on the subject.

natural remedies for lung cancer

natural remedies for lung cancer?
My grandma was just diagnosed with lung cancer and was given 3 to 9 months to live. She has chosen to not undergo any radiation/chemo therapy treatment, and just wants to remain comfortable. I was wondering what type of herbal and natural remedies there are that could help her feel comfortable, and also may help fight the cancer to prolong her life. The only thing that is bothering her is a deep chest cough, because the tumor has caused part of her lung to collapse, otherwise she is in no pain. Thank you.

That book will give you many answers and about where you can questions in the Bible answers. Also, about sugar is the food to feed the cancer. No bananas for cancer patients Best food for cancer people-sweet pot's, but only with butter.

Natural remedies are...surgery, chemo and radiation. Yep, that's it. If she wants no intervention, keep the oxygen tank and morphine ready. She's in for an agonizingly painful death. I'm sorry.

He could be in the process of giving up before treatment begins. Loss of taste can possibly be with his type of lung cancer or medications he's taking that makes food not taste good. My dad gave up before treatment started and he made comments about food not tasting good. Just be there for your friend.
2 :
I would say his loss of appetite is due to the shock he has just recieved from his doctor, the loss of his voice i couldn't say...... my dad had lung cancer and he did lose his voice for a while but that was after some treatment.
3 :
Depends what stage he is at???? My Mum had secondary lung cancer and about 3 weeks before she past she didnt eat anything and lost her voice.. Hard to say without knowing his situation fully.

is it the same a lung cancer and a tumor that grow in the lung for the metastasise of other tumor

is it the same a lung cancer and a tumor that grow in the lung for the metastasise of other tumor?
It is the same question for any other kind of cancer. My question is if when you have metastasis you have differente kind of cancers or only one in different tissues. If you have different kinds of cancer, must they be treated sepately?
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Metastases is a tumor that looks like the primary tumor. For instance, cells from a large bowel tumor enter in the blood or lymphatic vessels and goes to the liver or to the lung. Having metastases means the cancer is in stage IV, the most serious stage of the disease. The treatment is variable considering the kind of the tumor, the number and places of metastasis, the status of the patient. Usually chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used for the primar tumor as well as for known and unknown metastasis (one metastasis means the cancer is spreading and probably there are malignant cells in other organs as well). Sometimes the primary tumor and the metastasis can be surgical removed. More about cancer on my blog: http://www.newcancerguide.com Cristiana
2 :
They do different aggressive treatment for each type of cancer. My mom had lung cancer, it was squamous cell and it spread to the liver. They did radiation on the lung but could not on the liver.
3 :
When a cancer no matter what kind metastasizes it means it is on the loose in the body. Those cells that the cancer came from that can grow rapidly like lung tissue or skin make a happy home where every they land. That is most aggressive type of cancers and treated with he most effort. Other types like bone which is very very slow doesn't normally metastases because is a slow growing tissue. If you have different cancers they treat them depending on how fast they are growing and you what you chances are in going into remission. This is best a question left to an oncologist who is more aware of the treatment that are available and what your chances are than you can make a inform choice on how to treat it. Than again each person reacts to cancer differently. My mother had a good friend who lived with pancreatic cancer for 40 years normally someone who gets it dies shortly have they find out you have it. The drugs and treatment are changing all the time. I do hope this helps.
4 :
If you are asking if lung cancer cells and a metastasis from a breast cancer to the lungs are the same . . the answer is no they are not the same. A lung cancer cell orginates in the lung and will always be a lung cell. A breast cancer cell dislodges from the breast tissue and spreds to other areas . . that is called metastes. Metastatic breast cells can lodge in the lung and grow . . they are still breast cells, but are now growing at a distant site. Metastatic cancer cells can all be treated with the same protocol. In some occasions the patient may have two separate cancers . . a patient can have sarcoma and also have leukemia. In this case the patient may need to be treated for both diseases . . but it is extremely difficult. I do know one survivor who had both stage IV sarcoma and pre-leukemia, he was treated, had stem cell rescue, now disease free, and he is doing well right now.

Is there some place I can go to find help dealing with a spouse with lung cancer

Is there some place I can go to find help dealing with a spouse with lung cancer?
my husband has lung cancer and will not stop smoking , blames everything and everyone else for his illness especially me. How can I deal with this better. PS he is on oxygen 24/7

I am so sorry. Two things you can do. The first one I would try is talking to his oncologist's office. The office staff will have contact information for cancer support groups for patients AND families. In the meantime, try here: http://lchelp.org/ I had an uncle who had emphysema, on oxygen 24/7 and continued to smoke. He'd go out to the garage, disconnect his oxygen and light up. He'd cough, choke, spew, gag, wheeze and STILL keep sucking on the cigarette. He died a very painful death because he couldn't breath when his lungs shut down. Best wishes to you.
2 :
Call a local hospital and ask about support groups! I'm sure they know of groups that you can join where you can talk to people who can relate to you and perhaps, help you a little.
3 :
I had lung cancer in 1994 they took part of my left lung out. I get help from American cancer society. and you can see if there are any support groups in your area. I live in Fl. 6 mos and Co. 6mos and I connect with bothgroups. Also call you health department and social service in your area. Good luck and hang in there and look up. You can always blame someone else but put it where it belongs My husband died in 1990 from lung problems
4 :
i'm very sorry to hear of your husband. he sounds as though he is not really exepting his diagnosis. or he has excepted it and he feels he's done.you can't make him stop smoking and badgering will only make it worse. at this time you need help for you. you can try the local hospice. i don't know but, they may have info for you. your hospital most likely offers a spousal support group. try there as well. not only can they help you learn how to cope but, they can explain to you what your husband is going through and how he may be feeling so that you can be better prepared to deal with him. i wish only the best for you. god bless.
5 :
So sorry to hear about your husband. My husband was diagnosed March 20th, 2006. He went thru rdiation, chemo, gamma knife procedure and took a drug called tarceva. (It is very expensive but it has had good results) Sadly, my love passed June 6th 2006. He was terminal, and the treatments were not helping they actually worsened his condition. He went back to smoking for awhile. I dont know how far advanced his cancer is but if he is terminal, hell let him smoke the damage is done and cannot be reversed. If you need or want to talk you can email me . Good luck to you and your husband. Stay strong I know how hard it is.

how fast can you get lung cancer

how fast can you get lung cancer?
Is it possible to get lung cancer (or any smoking related cancer) from a single cigarette (even if it's hard to prove) or is lung cancer just possible at a long time use of cigarettes?
General Health Care - 3 Answers

1 :
LUNG CANCER Lung cancer is a malignant tumour of the lungs. Most commonly it is bronchogenic carcinoma (about 90%). Lung cancer is the most lethal malignant tumour worldwide, causing up to 3 million deaths annually. Only one in ten patients diagnosed with this disease will survive the next five years. Although lung cancer was previously an illness that affected predominately men, the lung cancer rate for women has been increasing in the last few decades, which has been attributed to the rising ratio of female to male smokers. The incidence of lung cancer is highly correlated with smoking. The above is an illustration for the United States incidence of lung cancer.Current research indicates that the factor with the greatest impact on risk of lung cancer is long-term exposure to inhaled carcinogens. The most common means of such exposure is tobacco smoke. Treatment and prognosis depend upon the histological type of cancer and the stage (degree of spread). Possible treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy Signs and symptoms Symptoms that suggest lung cancer include: dyspnea (shortness of breath) hemoptysis (coughing up blood) chronic cough wheezing chest pain cachexia (weight loss), fatigue and loss of appetite dysphonia (hoarse voice) clubbing of the fingernails (uncommon) If the cancer grows into the lumen it may obstruct the airway, causing breathing difficulties. This can lead to accumulation of secretions behind the blockage, predisposing the patient to pneumonia. Many lung cancers have a rich blood supply. The surface of the cancer may be fragile, leading to bleeding from the cancer into the airway. This blood may subsequently be coughed up. Depending on the type of tumor, so-called paraneoplastic phenomena may initially attract attention to the disease. In lung cancer, this may be Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (muscle weakness due to auto-antibodies), hypercalcemia and SIADH. Tumors in the top (apex) of the lung, known as Pancoast tumors, may invade the local part of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to changed sweating patterns and eye muscle problems (a combination known as Horner's syndrome), as well as muscle weakness in the hands due to invasion of the brachial plexus. In many patients, the cancer has already spread beyond the original site by the time they have symptoms and seek medical attention. Common sites of metastasis include the bone, such as the spine (causing back pain and occasionally spinal cord compression) and the brain. Types There are two main types of lung cancer categorised by the size and appearance of the malignant cells seen by a histopathologist under a microscope: small-cell (roughly 20%) and non-small cell (80%) lung cancer. This classification although based on simple pathomorphological criteria has very important implications for clinical management and prognosis of the disease. Causes Exposure to carcinogens, such as those present in tobacco smoke, immediately causes cumulative changes to the tissue lining the bronchi of the lungs (the bronchial mucous membrane) and more tissue gets damaged until a tumour develops. There are four major causes of lung cancer (and, actually, cancer in general): Carcinogens such as those in cigarette smoke Radiation exposure Genetic susceptibility Viral infection The role of smoking Smoking, particularly of cigarettes, is believed to be by far the main cause of lung cancer, which at least in theory makes it one of the easiest diseases to prevent. In the United States, smoking is estimated to account for 87% of lung cancer cases in the U.S. (90% in men and 79% in women). There are hundreds of known carcinogens—such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons—present in cigarette smoke. The length of time a person continues to smoke as well as the amount smoked increases the person's chances of contracting lung cancer. If a person stops smoking, these chances steadily decrease as the lung damage is repaired. Passive smoking—the inhalation of smoke from another's smoking—has recently been identified as a much larger cause of lung cancer in non-smokers than previously believed. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1993 concluded that about 3,000 lung cancer-related deaths a year were caused by passive smoking, however since this report was declared null and void by a federal judge in 1998, the true extent is still contested by scientists
2 :
The risk from smoking is statistical... The more you smoke, the greater the risk. A single cigarette could, in theory, trigger cancer, but the risk would be very small.
3 :
Actually it is possible to get lungg cancer if you have never smoked

how many years can someone smoke untill they get lung cancer

how many years can someone smoke untill they get lung cancer?
How many years can someone smoke cigarates or weed, (smoke is smoke) untill they develop lunge disease or cancer?
Cancer - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There is no set time. Some people who never smoke get it. Some people who are only exposed to secondhand smoke get it. Some people who smoke a long time don't get it. The longer one smokes, the worst the effects on lungs, heart, mouth, esophagus, throat, circulatory system, etc. Quit as soon as you can. Each year smoking now takes one off the end of your life.
2 :
It can happen fairly soon, or it can take a longer while. Don't take a chance -- stop now.
3 :
Smoking only raises you chances of getting lung cancer. It does not mean you WILL get it. My granddad smoked for nearly sixty years before stopping and is still in good health.
4 :
Depends on the person. Some people can smoke for decades and not get cancer; others can smoke less than 10 years and get it. It depends on your genetic makeup and how much you smoke.
5 :
It certainly depends on a lot of things. Recently, my uncle died at the age of 50 from lung cancer, but we were quite surprised he lasted that long, because usually, people who start smoking early in life, say 12 - 16 years of age, are more likely to give in to the illness by their 40s or even before that. This of course very sad, because about 80 percent of teenagers both smoke and drink today, yet very few parents know about this. Anyway, going back to your question, a person will live about 10 to 30 years without getting the disease, but you should be aware that the younger a person is, the easier for that person to get the cancer. Of course, there are people who have been smoking their entire life and only died in their 70s and 80s but these are rare. The opposite can also be true, which is that some people will unfortunately die within their first five years use. My father, who's 48, is two packs a day, sometimes three, and I really worry about him. Moreover, the amount of cigarettes smoked plays a role, but most people will smoke from one to four packs per day, which is enough to kill you. Beside from all the negative helth issues that smoking gives to human body, I'd say that it is also a very bad thing otherwise. For example, people who smoke tend to be labeled as "bad", while you might lose respect from some friends. Another bad thing is the fact that smoke creates adiction, so when you need it, you gotta take it. Basically, you're not independent anymore, because smoke has your life! Besides, smoke isn't really condidered lady-like, mainly because men used to smoke when the joined the army, got into jail, etc. Furtheremore, smoke affects women more than men, since their body is less developed. To have a recap, a person is likely to get the cancer is an average of 13.7 years, with the teenagers being more vunerable.
6 :
For some perspective, you should probably ask this question of someone who has lung cancer. It really isn't worth the risk!

does lung cancer have a genetic component

does lung cancer have a genetic component?
my grandfather was just diagnosed with lung cancer. he quit smoking years ago. i jUST quit... is there a genetic component to lung cancer?
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Not really, to be honest. I mean we don't know for sure, but there is no verified "lung cancer gene". Cigarette smoking is most likely the reason your grandfather developed the lung cancer, so it's good that you quit. From the Merck Manual: Respiratory epithelial cells require prolonged exposure to cancer-promoting agents and the accumulations of multiple genetic mutations before becoming cancerous. The mutated genes are K-RAS, MYC, HER2/neu, BCL-2, p53, APC etc. _______________ These genes are in every cell and control cell division, so mutation in them makes cells divide too quickly. But the vast, vast majority of these mutations are spontaneous, not hereditary, and if they're hereditary the affected develop cancer very early, not at your grandfather's age. So you're probably alright.
2 :
-Also there are other reasons for cancer ,hence ,analysis of your family lifestyle may give some clue to cancer origin & control

It is probably a virus message, since there seem to be fewer than 30 people with that name in the nation, and they are all in their 40s to 60s. I'm not 100% sure, but it does not even seem that you can be "born with lung cancer", since cancer cells grow faster than the "host" cells, and fetal cells are already growing so fast, it seems illogical that cancer in an organ as large as a lung would permit the fetus from ever making it as far as birth, doesn't it? People say things about cancer that are nonsense all the time. If you & the folks in your "prayer circle" really want to help, volunteer your time in a Children's Cancer ward, or give to a cancer charity. Few activities fail quite as reliably as prayer...although it has been shown to have positive effect on the person praying! http://www.lungcanceronline.org/

When are treatments against lung cancer most effective

When are treatments against lung cancer most effective?
I've heard and read that radiotherapy is most effective against "early stages" of lung cancer. Usually how long are these "early stages?" One to twelve months? One to six? Help please! Troy I don't smoke. I've never smoked or gotten addicted to smoking im my whole life. :P I'm fourteen. I'm asking this for another reason. I want to comfort someone that I care about.

When the cancer is confined to one lobe of one lung and has not begun to spread. However, it is difficult to catch early, and mortality is extremely high. Just stop smoking. Honestly, you all know the risks, why do you still do it?
2 :
cancer stages are not done by time. the staging is done according to the size of the tumor and if the disease has spread. it also depends on the type of cancer it is- non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or small cell lung cancer (SCLC) the early stage lung cancer is going to be a small tumor that has not extended beyond the lung(tosurrounding areas like the ribs, esophagus etc.) and with no lymph node involement or metastasis. Lymph node involvement means that the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes-which is the bodies drainage system. from there the cancer cells can spread to pretty much anywhere in the body but for lung cancer the most common places are liver, brain, bone. when the cancer spreads to a different area of the body that is called metastasis. right now, it is believed that a combo of chemotherapy and radiation therapy(radiotherapy) is the best treatment option. but it really depends on the individual case. some people cannot tolerate one or the other of these treatments because of other conditions that they may have. (i am a radiation therapist and treat people with all kinds of cancer. everyones case is different-this info is just the basics) good-luck to you
3 :
Surgery is always the most effective treatment for cancer when possible. Cancer treatment is usually done with multiple therapies. They work together. I don't know how you can see one is more "effective" than another. As for rate of progression, that is highly dependent on the mutated genes. When performing analyzing a biopsy sample, the histology report will include a remark about mitosis rate (cell division). So, I don't think you can get a good answer with the few details you provided.
4 :
Cesium chloride with Rubidium and DMSO, oxygen drops, ip6 pills, and aloe vera. Get a fresh aloe vera plant from a flower shop. Cut off the pricks. Cut a chunk off and put it into the blender with ice cream. It will be extremely bitter and thats why we have to put ice cream in there. Drink this every day for a while. This should help cure it OR reduce the cancer. Good luck. Also, using all the cures together will get you better results. Remember to eat bananas or potatoes after taking the cesium chloride because you will lose alot of potassium after taking this medicine...good luck..

is trying to vomit alot a sign of lung cancer

is trying to vomit alot a sign of lung cancer?
Before my dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer he had a lots of problem with digestive system like stomach acid nearly every night he would try and throw up but it rarely anything came out. I think meaby cancer was producing somekind of acid that he was trying to vomit.

Yes. But lung cancer does not produce acid. It produces cytokines that make the bowel moves slower. Sometimes things come back up.

Why do some people smoke so many cigarettes when then they know that it can give them lung cancer

Why do some people smoke so many cigarettes when then they know that it can give them lung cancer?
It's bad enough to smoke one, but some people smoke like there's no such thing as lung cancer... like the commercials are only talking foolishness. don't they care about their health?
Other - Health - 27 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
because i am a weak idiot
2 :
because they don't care
3 :
Because they are stupid and apparently don't value their life.
4 :
It is called addiction. Why do people eat at McDonalds 3 or 4 times a week knowing their food causes heart disease, obesity and more?
5 :
people use heroin and meth as well I couldn't tell you why.
6 :
Its the nicotine man. Its highly addicting. If smokers jsut stop smoking, they get chills shakes and think they could only stop it by smoking more and more cigs.
7 :
coz its addictive and a stress reliever (apparently) - i gave up months ago woohoo lol
8 :
Because cigarettes are very addictive. Nicotine has been found to actually be more chemically addictive than both heroin and cocaine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine#Dependence
9 :
You will never understand it unless you smoke. It really is an addiction. You just constantly have a craving for another one. Once you smoke it is like you can't have peace in your head without having one like every hour.
10 :
well it's a "drug addicted"
11 :
Most people who do smoke just don't care. They think about the bad effects of it but then think, "What ever, I'm having a bad day," or "I'm enjoying myself too much right now with this." There are many reasons to quit and none to start really.
12 :
Well i guess they get addicted and they cant stop, but if they were smart and really cared about their health, they would do whatever they could to quit. But thats my guess, i wish i really knew too :]
13 :
uhhh..... because they are stupid for getting addcited in the first place
14 :
Cigarettes are VERY addictive due to nicotine, making some people unable to quit, or even think seriously about it. The better question is why people start smoking in the first place, when the the health consequences are now well documented.
15 :
I've wondered that same thing. I can't figure out why anyone would light up the first one knowing they'll be addicted. It's the filthiest habit.....smokers drop their half-smoked cigarettes or the butts just anywhere....someone's yard, in front of public places, parking lots, the street, etc. I truly don't care if they want to harm their own bodies, but to subject MINE to it is just wrong.
16 :
They smoke , knowing it can cause lung cancer , for the same reason that people over-eat knowing that it will make them fat and bring on many health problems . Or for the same reason that people use booze or drugs knowing that it's very dangerous to their health .
17 :
its not that they dont care, some of them just might be addicted to the nicotine. they have to be strong to be able to actually give up a cigarette. and kick the addiction.
18 :
ACTUALLY, MANY OF THEM DO! they know its bad but cant stop! nicotine is addictive...once they have it, they HAVE to have more...otherwize they get horrible cravings, horribly sick, and very irritable...it messes up the chemical making in their brain...my mom finally quit after 27 years and she did it with chantix...she said the pills messed with her brain...she felt horrible and sick all the way through it but she is happy for the difference it made...she never thought she could stop
19 :
because when they started they thought it was cool then it became aditive and now they can't stop. It is called self control and they don't have it....I have never smoked and I would rather die they light up a cigerette....GROSS!
20 :
It's not a matter of intellect or concern for your own health, it's very, very addictive. I don't know how I ever quit but I'm glad I did. We do things everyday that are a danger to our health such as eat unhealthy foods and speed while driving. It's just another one of those things...
21 :
Because I want to commit suicide slowly.
22 :
A Nicotine addiction is difficult to overcome. It takes some effort and presistance to break a nicotine habit, many succeed, after many trials, they need to be encouraged to try again and again until they get free. Looking a addictions to many different substances , self destruction........ is ineed ,in question.....
23 :
yes they do care about there health and even though they know about what it dose to them, they continue to smoke because its addicting and its really hard to just stop.
24 :
Well cigarettes are very addicting and after you get used to the awful taste, smell, and the large stomach aches they are addicting and people get sick without them. This is because their body has learned to live with the nicotine and now relies on it, so with out it you feel dreadful.
25 :
Because it's an addition, svoloch' and apparently you do not understand the craving and "hunger" that addiction causes you. I myself am addicted to blood and must drink my fill lest I suffer horrible pains and suffering. So have a heart for the poor proletariat member who needs a smoke to calm his nerves after being forced into the slavery of American capitalism by rich elitist geshtupniks, dahling, and don't be so bourgeois.
26 :
becouse you get addicted doh
27 :
Why do some people assume that people who smoke don't know what the risks are? But...just a little bit of info for you...a lot of people who smoke didn't know about the risks when they first started. Now...it's too late. I guess people don't believe that nicotine is more addictive than heroin. Why aren't you asking the people who do heroin the same question. You wouldn't because it's ok for them to be addicted and to use that as their excuse, but it's not for smokers.

I am so sorry of your Grandma's diagnoses. Trying to figure out how long a person can live after a lung cancer diagnoses is very difficult to determine. It highly depends how much the cancer has spread and which organs are affected. With me, I was told perhaps one year with treatment, but on May 15, it will be three years since my dx and have had chemo which has likely helped stabilize my cancer. With stage iv lung cancer, only 2% of people live for five years.. at least those are the stats I was told.. its so different for everyone. Often with treatment, people can even go into remission for years. I wish all the best for your family.

how old are u hun?? http://www.ehow.com/about_5456138_signs-symptoms-lung-cancer-children.html are u coughing?? doed ur chest hurt?? u should really ask a adult to get you to a doctor...asthma is common amoung kids. the only way to know is get checked.im sure its no big deal.
2 :
asthma shares characteristic of cancer in hard of breathing however cancer has the following features as well the asthma doesnt have: - chest (lung) pain that does not go away - phlem with blood - periodic pneumonia if u dont have these, u probably has asthma, especially for a 12 yrs old (too young to have cancer).
3 :
it is extremely unlikely that you would have lung cancer at your age-unless you work in a coal mine and smoke 3 packs a day. this just shows you need smarter friends. you could have asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, a cold...see your pediatrician if you also have a fever-otherwise see if you're better by next week.
4 :
Lung cancer at your age would be very very very very very unlikely. Almost impossible. Check out www.cancer.gov and look at the lung cancer section. In fact it is a very uncommon condition for people under the age of 44.

my daughters boyfriends mom has stage 3 lung cancer she is going to start chemo they have 2 children one is 2 years old & the other one is 2 weeks old is it ok for her to be around them after treatments & does anyone know the success rate of recovering from stage 3 lung cancer?

As long as children are made aware of what is going on in an age appropriate way, children can handle just about anything including death and disease. My nieces and nephews handled my sister (their aunt) and mother's (their grandma) cancer treatments and deaths quite well...some were more interested than others but that isn't likely to be a problem with your children because they are so young. They are in no physical danger -- in fact, they will likely be a danger to her (chemo interferes with and sometimes destroys the immune system...and as you know, young children are little germ factories) Lung cancer is deadly. Stage 3 is very serious and she will likely need a lot of care. It depends on a number of things -- including the particular kind of lung cancer she has. You can find the stats online, but full recovery is rather rare.
2 :
Chemotherapy can reduce the effectiveness of the immune system so make sure the kids are not sick when visiting the patient. The children will not be harmed in anyway by visiting the patient. There are people who've survived stage three lung cancer. I recommend not paying attention to the statistics because they can be misleading. Adopt a positive attitude and be willing to fight the disease.

I'm hoping this is a joke, a very distasteful one at that. You cannot cure lung cancer, you can only treat it, and she has to see a doctor about that...I really hope you knew that though.
2 :
There is usually no cure for lung cancer. Rarely, if it is diagnosed in the earliest stages, it can be removed and the person can live out their natural lifespan. The cancer could come back even with removal and chemotherapy and rad. However, most of the time, it's diagnosed after the disease has symptoms, or when it is in the metastatic (spread to other organs) phase. At this phase, chemotherapy and rad is really more about symptom management, and will not likely significantly extend life. Surgery is not an option, and most patients will die within the year.

how does eating alot of meat cause lung cancer

how does eating alot of meat cause lung cancer?

Dr. Oz states that red meat causes alot of problems including cancer. Look at the book "You- on a diet" or any of the "YOU" books. He's great!
2 :
And how pray have you come to this extremely interesting conclusion? You should hasten to send your paper to The New England Journal of Medicine and we shall all read it with utmost interest. You dont find web sites because eating meat doesn't get you lung cancer. It gets you gout and a lot of rheumatic disorders apart from the fact that it sends your cholesterol count skyrocketing. Do some serious research next time. You certainly wouldn't make my team.
3 :
Ask anyone on Myspace on my friends list~www.myspace.com/andie9923. Lots of vegans and vegetarians~Dolly Doolittle (or Vegan Valentine)would be your best bet.... Only thing I know is you can get carcinogens from cooking meat on coal, or eating very well done meat, etc.... And don't pay any attention to Albert Heger. I'm sure if he worked for the New England Journal of Medicine or whatever it is he says he does, he wouldn't be handing out advice on Yahoo Answers......puhleeeeeeeeeze Al.....
4 :
It doesn't. That's why you can't find a website. The only thing that has been linked to lung cancer is smoking. There is no scientific evidence to prove that meat is connected to any cancer at all, let alone lung cancer. I say this as a vegan (that means no animal products at all, so no meat at all) who has had cancer. If it is a school project you will get a very low grade if you pursue this line of argument, as you will certainly not be able to find any credible sources.
5 :
Nothing has been proven that links meat to cancer. However, the proposed link isnt really the meat itself. Its the constant stream of hormones and prophalactic anit-everything meds that our livestock are being fed in todays world of 'factory farming'. The proposed link isnt only to cancer, but to a lot of other health ailments including the ever growing list of resistant viruses and bacteria (mrsa for example). Now, most of that has not been scientifically linked and a lot of people have a lot of controversy on it, but you will likely find more info if you know what to actually look for.
6 :
I believe it's the carcinogens from cooking the meat. A recent study found that red meat raises your risk of several different types of cancers, most notably breast cancer and colon cancer. I'll provide any links I can dig up. Shame on you all telling her that it doesn't, it does...you just don't want to believe it does. I don't think you'll find too many documents linking it directly to lung cancer, I don't think they are sure of it yet. Carcinogens raise your chances for any cancer you may be genetically susceptible to. I'm a vegetarian as well who has had cancer. just because you're a vegan and you got cancer does not negate the fact that meat causes cancer The largest study of Western diets and colon cancer ever done has found that the more red meat and animal fat that people eat, the more likely they are to develop this common and deadly cancer. Researchers said the study offered strong evidence confirming a long-held hypothesis that diet was an important factor in determining who got colon cancer. Earlier studies had shown that when people moved from countries like Japan, where they ate little meat or fat, to countries like the United States, where meat and fat consumption was high, they were more likely to develop colon cancer. But the earlier studies had not conclusively shown that red meat and animal fat by themselves, rather than other dietary or environmental factors, led to the cancer. The Surgeon General, the American Cancer Society and other groups have advised Americans to eat less meat, but Dr. Walter Willett, a researcher at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who directed the study, concluded, "If you step back and look at the data, the optimum amount of red meat you eat should be zero." A spokeswoman for the meat industry, however, said the study did not prove cause and effect. The cancer society said 110,000 new cases of colon cancer would be diagnosed this year and that 60,900 Americans had colon or rectal cancer, an incidence second only to lung cancer in the United States. In the study, being published today in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers asked 88,751 women from 34 to 59 years old to fill out questionnaires describing their diet and medical history. The women, all nurses, were followed for six years, and 150 of them developed colon cancer. The more animal fat the women ate, the more likely they were to get colon cancer. Those eating the most animal fat were nearly twice as likely to develop colon cancer as those eating the least animal fat. The researchers also found that the women who ate red meat as a main course every day were two and a half times more likely to have had colon cancer than the women who ate meat sparingly or not at all. The amount of chicken and fish the women ate did not contribute to their risk of developing colon cancer. This may reflect the fact that there is much less fat in chicken and fish, the researchers said, adding that the cancer rate might be related to the total amount of animal fat consumed. But they said they could not rule out the possibility that red meat itself contained cancer-causing chemicals. Cancer-Causing Mechanism It is not yet known how fat could lead to colon cancer, but researchers have speculated that it could induce the cancer by increasing the secretion of bile acids into the colon. Bacteria that live in the colon can digest bile acids and spew out chemicals that transform normal colon cells into cancerous ones. "I was very impressed with the paper," said Dr. David Eddy, a professor at Duke University who has studied cancer risks for the American Cancer Society. The results "go a long way toward confirming" the dietary hypothesis, he added. "It's a good study," said Dr. Peter Greenwald, the director of cancer prevention and control at the National Cancer Institute. "It adds to the evidence on fat as a risk factor for colon cancer." P.S who ever down voted me read what I posted there is a ton of information regarding meat consumption and cancer. what's even more sad about this, is you're probably a cancer patient/survivor who down voted this. Did you even read the information, or just hate me for not agreeing with your notions. I challenge who ever down voted to present any evidence that meat DOESN'T cause cancer...that's the information you will never find from a credible publication.
