Is lung cancer the leading cancer killer in the United States

Is lung cancer the leading cancer killer in the United States?
According to a recent article : Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, causing more deaths each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. At the same time, people seem to view the disease differently. "When you look at National Institutes of Health research dollars spent per diagnosis and per patient death, lung cancer is woefully below breast cancer and AIDS," he added. "Historically, lung cancer has been stigmatized," explained Dr. Corey Langer, medical director of thoracic oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, in Philadelphia. "It's viewed as a self-inflected illness and, at least partially, it is." For more information visit: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_34414.html

Hm, that's interesting. I thought colon cancer was the worst.
2 :
Good question and a good point. Of course AIDS is the disease DE hour so of course its going to get all the money and breast cancer supporters have really hit it big in the public relations and more power to them but you are right the funding for lung cancer is inadequate compared to these 2. However, I did hear one doctor talking about this very thing, referring to the funding of breast cancer to others, and he said that a lot of new meds come from people trying to find cures for another disease and he believed that the more research in any field of cancer research the better.
3 :
One of the reasons that the research dollars are lower for Lung Cancer is that we already know how to prevent over 80 percent of cases. Don't smoke

There is more hope than many know. Go to http://www.knowledgeofhealth.com and read all the articles in the archives under the topic headings "cancer" and "chelation" and you will probably be surprised. This could save you life.

3 :
Lung cancer is predominantly caused by smoking. The individual does not necessarily have to be a smoker. Second hand smoke has been well documented to cause lung cancers. People who spouses are smokers are at an incredible higher risk for lung cancer than other groups. Other causes of lung cancer include: excessive radiation (i.e. x-rays), toxic agents other than tobacco (i.e. aerosols). Individuals who have a close family member diagnosed with cancer are also at higher risk. Treat options are limited. There are several types of lung cancer. Some types are more aggressive than others. For example, small cell carcinoma is much more lethal than large cell carcinoma. Also, you need to consider the size of the tumor. Small tumors can be surgically removed followed with focused radiation therapy. Large tumors are usually first treated with radiation therapy to reduce the size of the tumor. This is followed by surgical removal of the tumor. Afterwards, the patient is treated with chemotherapy. If the cancer has metastasized then options are very limited. High dosed chemotherapy is probably the best option in these cases.

Lung cancer is mostly caused by smoking or secondhand smoke if you are around a heavy smoker. Can also be caused by pollution in the air in people who are genetically predisposed to react to certain chemicals. Cancer can also be found in the lung if it originated elsewhere in the body and spread to the lung.

jesus is...have faith

the question is do u smoke?well if u do than thats the answer and the only way to treat it is to do kimo therapy

What are the Odds of a Two Months Old Baby having Lung Cancer

What are the Odds of a Two Months Old Baby having Lung Cancer?
i am asking because my friend said that some random couple stopped her at the store and asked her for a donation because their baby boy of two months had LUNG CANCER. i am not a doctor but that doesn't seem right. i am not saying its not possible. it took my grandpa 55 years of smoking to get Lung Cancer. (he survived!!) so yea....... can a two months old have lung cancer? what are the odds? p.s. i know smoking is not the only way of getting lung cancer

Sadly very good chances, oh my goodness the young ones get every form of it. St Jude's is a great cause to donate to, because they help families, to ensure all cancer babies/children are treated and not turned away.
2 :
I doubt it is the type of lung cancer a smoker of 50+ years would get..however it could be a cancerous tumor..I would personally not give any money to a stranger in the grocery store..ask them what hospital the baby is and than make a donation for the child direct to the hospital.
3 :
They might be a conartest trying to get free money,be logic and you have to use ur common sence unless the baby's mom was a smoker or he was around some one that smocks (second hand smoking you know GOOD LUCK
4 :
it's possible, could be a tumor, or something to do with the way it's body is still forming. bless their little hearts.
5 :
Anything is possible. Cancer knows no age. However, in that situation I would not have given money unless they had gotten permission from the store to set up a booth and have a fund raiser.
6 :
I would think it was a scam - there are many other lung diseases or conditions the baby could have I have never heard of a child with lung cancer
7 :
There is a very rare type of lung cancer that babies and young children (under age four) can get called “pleuropulmonary blastoma” or “PPB”. There are different types of lung cancer and only one of them is associated with smoking. PPB Registry http://www.ppbregistry.org/ Cancer.net: Pleuropulmonary Blastoma - Childhood http://www.cancer.net/patient/Cancer+Types/Pleuropulmonary+Blastoma+-+Childhood But you should always investigate any handout before donating.
8 :
2 chances. Slim and none. Someone is trying to hustle others.

How long can a person have to live with lung cancer

How long can a person have to live with lung cancer?
Well my 75 year old grandpa just was diaognosed with lung cancer and i am worried that he might die soon =[ . Could he die within this year or can he still live for another 10 years. i would ask him my self, but i do not want to pressure him/make him nervous..

it depends. sometimes a few months sometimes years.
2 :
My father was diagnosed with lung cancer over 12 years ago. He had part of a lung removed and is still here today. So, don't give up hope.
3 :
my mom is 59 and was just diagnosed with stage 4 NSCLC in oct of 2007. she's currently at home under hospice care, and has only days/weeks left to live. it all depends on if your grandpa wants to do chemo and/or radiation, and if he has a good response to it/them. my mom had a HORRIBLE response to chemo...an allergy, and she stopped doing chemo earlier this year & started radiation. now, she's done with all that. she just wants to stay at home & live out the rest of her days without being poked & prodded and so very sick from chemo. good luck. it's hard.
4 :
Depends on the type of lung cancer. Small cell cancer is the worst and most live less than a year. Other cancers may be confined to one lobe of a lung a removal means cure. Many people beat lung cancer it just depends on the stage. Stage 1 is early cancer, stage 4 and 5 is late cancer with not much hope for a cure. Spend as much time with your grandpa as you can, he has a wealth of information to share with you and it will be great memories for you later in life.
5 :
I had cancer, I beat it too, well, i guess you could say i caught it early enough. Cancer doesn't mean that the person will die, there are ways to beat it and fight it off. It really depends how soon your grandfather's cancer was caught and what his treatment options are at this time. i wish there was a Crystal clear answer, the truth is that everyone is different, everyone passes away differently, depending on his treatment options, the type of cancer and the spread of the cancer he may live another 10 years or longer, however, there are no guarantees with anything. talking to your grandfather may not be a bad thing, but, it depends how open your family is with talking about issues.ask your mom or dad before talking to your grandfather. it's normal to be scared, not knowing what will happen is a scary thing, especially when you don't know exactly what the situation is, i would talk with your family and if they are open to sharing feelings then express your concerns and fears unfortunately, we all could pass away, cancer or no cancer, i've learned to really appreciate life, especially when i spent a year, or wasted a year concerend about if life was going to be taken away from me, my advice to you is, no matter what the situation is, no matter how long your grandfather has to live, enjoy all the moments you have with him and always keep him in your memory, if he only has 1 year left or 20 years left, enjoy all the moments you have with him, so, that one day when he finally passes away you will always have those memories and moments to remember

My Brother was told he had 6 months and lived a year and a half.

My grandmother passed away from cancer about 5 years ago, so I've seen it, and it's not an easy thing to deal with, even if you're prepared. She'll be extremely fatigued, and will bear very little physical resemblance to the woman you've known your whole life. She will most likely be extremely weak, pale, and appear hollowed out. She also may have moments where she is not aware of her surroundings, or does not know who anybody is. When I visited my grandmother, she started talking about my sister, but using my name while I was standing right in front of her. If she is not going for treatment, that means she is ready to pass on, and will probably express that readiness verbally. It'll be hard to hear her speak like that, but you just have to let her. I am so sorry you and your family are going through this. I remember clearly my own experience, and it was one of the hardest two weeks of my life. I will be praying for your family, and for your grandmother as well.

How did my little cousin get lung cancer

How did my little cousin get lung cancer?
I have a younger cousin who is only five and she got diagnosed with lung cancer and I don't know how it happened. No one in her family smokes and no one she is close to smokes either. I don't understand this at all....she is so young...

There is no answer to your question. Cancer does not discriminate. I had 0.02% chance of getting breast cancer based on my age, health, family history, etc. I got it. I had even less of a chance of getting another, totally unrelated cancer, and I did. Doctors said I had a better chance of winning the lottery AND being struck by lightening than I had getting a third cancer and yes, you guess it, I did. The first was at 36, 2nd at 37, & 3rd at 38. I wish I could say something that would help it all make sense but it doens't. What I can tell you is, treatment will be hard on your cousin, but as a patient I believe it's harder watching someone you love going through treatment. Be strong, don't lose faith, pray and love her every day you have her.
2 :
This is probably not the usual type of lung cancer that is often (85 to 90%) related to a long years of tobacco abuse. Find out the histology of this malignancy from the pathology report - if your cousin's parents will release this private information to you. There are many types of cancer that may involve the lungs in a five year old person. This may not be a primary lung cancer but rather a malignancy that started elsewhere and spread to the lung. A nephroblastoma (Wilm's Tumor) could do this, and these are highly responsive to treatments these days. We need more information here. "Lung cancer" is not one disease. Oh I’m so sorry. We just don’t know what causes cancer in anyone or why some people get it and others don’t. Smoking is only a risk factor for lung cancer it doesn’t mean a smoker will get it or that a mom-smoker will not. It is so unfair and wrong for children to get cancer. I had a 4-month-old baby with metastatic melanoma a few weeks ago, no one understands why. Lung cancer in a child is so very rare. The only type I am aware of is pleuropulmonary blastoma there are less than 50 of these cases worldwide each year. If this is the kind of cancer your cousin has I have included a link to their registry for you, hopefully it will help to answer any questions you may have. http://www.ppbregistry.org/
4 :
There are times when life is definitely not fair. This is one. As Spreedog wrote it is not possible to answer your question without more specific information. It is extremely rare for a child that young, in Canada or the US, to develop a primary tumour in the lung. Simple reason is that they generally are not exposed to sufficient carcinogens. The good news is that long term survival rates are improving.
5 :
It's cause by her surroundings, about 1 in 10 lung cancer patients has no history of direct tobacco exposure. A majority of these patients are women and have a subtype of lung cancer with adenocarcinoma histology. Although rarely discussed, exposure to toxic fumes in the workplace or environmental toxins in the air contribute to a significant number of deaths from lung cancer. For example, occupational exposure to diesel motor emissions, asbestos, and paint was found to be significantly correlated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
