How does smoking cause lung cancer

How does smoking cause lung cancer?
How does smoking cause lung cancer? Is it because the chemicals or the actual smoke. If it is because the chemicals, does that mean inhaling smoke without chemicals would not lead to lung cancer (ex. Camp Fires, etc)..

All smoke contains chemical compounds. Tobacco smoke is simply the worst. There are many dozens of carcinogenic chemical compounds in tobacco smoke. More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. In 2004 - lung cancer killed more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer combined. Lung cancer accounts for at least 31% of all deaths from cancer. Approximately 90% of these could have been prevented if people had not smoked cigarettes. Tobacco addiction is by far the most important risk factor in the development of lung cancer. There are almost 160,000 lung cancer deaths per year attributable to smoking.  (Source:  ACS)

How do cats get lung cancer

How do cats get lung cancer?
My wonderful cat, Pounce, was just diagnosed today with lung cancer. He is only 10 years old. We are non-smokers. How would he get this? We are just devastated as we love him so much. He's lost some weight and is limping. The vet gave us some meds to help with pain and increase his appetite to help stop the weight loss. Besides this and lots of love, is there anything else we can do?

Where did you get him from? Could he have been exposed to tobacco smoke as a kitten? Is he an outdoor cat? Could he have come across asbestos, benzene or any other of the known carcinogens in a neighbours yard? As for treattment, if you can control the pain, continue to love him. If you can't control the pain, love him even more and have him euthanased. Having been through cancer treatment, surgery, chemo and radiation, the only thing that made me able to cope was the knowledge that it would end and I would be better. An animal does not have that knowledge and I would never subject an animal I loved to that treatment.

I'm so sorry to hear about Pounce. I'm a veterinary technician at a Holistic animal clinic and we deal with a lot of cancer patients. Sometimes there is really no traceable reason, so don't blame yourself.Just like with humans sometimes something in the body just goes wrong. With lung cancer I dont think they generally recommend chemo or radiation unless they catch it very early. And any decision to do that has to be carefully considered from their perspective. You'd need to weigh how much worse they may feel during treatments vrs how much better they'll feel in the long run or how much more time it would buy you. Typical western treatments probably will include steroids like Prednisone that actually does slow down some cancerous growths, antibiotics to help prevent any infection, and drugs to control pain or other symptoms he may be having. If you want to seek out a holistic or alternative type of treatment they may offer you things that can help make him more comfortable and support his immune system as well. It may or may not buy him more time, but in my experience owners usually feel like their pets were happier and more comfortable for longer than they had expected. They'll most likely talk about nutrition, herbs and supplements, perhaps acupuncture for pain control and that limping. They may also recommend flower essences or homeopathy to help with some of the emotions that can surround a situation like this. If you do decide to seek a Holistic consult I'd make sure to go to a properly trained and accredited one. The AHVMA (American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association) website is a good resource. http://www.ahvma.org/ Good luck with whatever route you decide to take.

Its hard to say, remember if you are in doubt you could always get a second opinion. Take heart, the animal is only ten years old, he could still live years longer. You may want to take these vet serious illness diagnosis with a grain of salt, cats usually live less than 20 years and problems associated with aging are expected. Remember vets are businessmen also. Try giving him some omega 3 or Greens type supplements mixed in with the food, to improve immunity. If the doctor is hinting at treatments that may run in the thousands of dollars, you may want to forego them, and let the animal live naturally and in as much comfort as you can provide.

Has anyone out there really had any positive results from the flax seed oil and cottege cheese in lung cancer

Has anyone out there really had any positive results from the flax seed oil and cottege cheese in lung cancer?
My dad was just diagnosed with non small cell stage iv lung cancer and I am desperately searching for anything that may help. Please don't send me links to websites for chinese herbs or commercial sites. I really need to know if anybody has had any good results from the cottage cheese/ flax seed oil. There seems to be a lot of positive info out there. I want personal accounts if anybody is currently doing this program.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I know how anxious you are to help him, but there's no evidence that any diet, including this one, has any effect on the progress of cancer. People like Johanna Budwig, who devised this diet, make wild and unproven claims and exploit the desperation of vulnerable people. Yes, you will find unsubstantiated testimonials on the internet; but you have no way of knowing if the person ever had cancer, much less that they have been cured. The plural of anecdote is not data. Unlike conventional treatments, this one has not been proven in clinical trials. Anyone who follows Johanna Budwig's recommendations will be investing time, money and hope in something that is not effective, as well consuming quantities of not very enjoyable food. My best wishes to you and your father.
2 :
Linseed* oil & cheese doesn't even SOUND like a viable "cure" for anything, does it? Really? Except may constipation? Budwig was a complete fraud. How to tell a fraud from an earnest person? If someone tells you that a little olive oil in your gasoline will improve your mileage, there is a possibility it is true; but if they tell you that it will also stabilize the engine if you put it in the radiator, improve your reception if you rub a little on the antenna, make the seats more comfortable if you rub a little on the leather, and stop your windscreen from shattering if you rub a little on the glass, you should be able to figure out they are trying to sell you olive oil. Budwig calimed her diet cured too many different things for it to have any value. It also makes you wonder why people in the Middle East get cancer, they eat cheese & flaxseed all the time! I'm very sorry your Dad has to go through this, but medicine is the most promising path to recovery.

how many years of smoking will it take to get lung cancer

how many years of smoking will it take to get lung cancer?
i've been smoking almost two years now and i fear i may have lung cancer.. is there any chance of it? or should i just not worry?

It's not based on the number of years you smoke but how your cells change. There are people who smoke their whole lives and never get cancer. There are others that never smoke or only smoke for a short time who do get it. The best thing for you to do would be to quit...your chances of developing lung cancer drop dramatically just from quitting.
2 :
There is always a possibility. I'm 24 and smoked for 9 years. I quit in January and I don't have cancer. that I know of anyways. Yeah, you should worry to an extent. Smoking can cause cancer obviously. My grandpa has smoked non-filtered cigarettes for over 60 years and has no problems. Other people have smoked for 1 year and have gotten it. If you are concerned then go to your doctor and quit smoking. I know it's hard to do, trust me, I know! But I've felt so much healthier since I quit. Plus I have more money!
3 :
3 to 4 years and yes there might be a chance you might get it, yes you should worry.
4 :
will it is how long u have been smoking
5 :
Plenty of people who have never smoked have gotten lung cancer. There are 2 basic types Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Odds are better for recovery from NSCLC as they are solid tumors that can be surgically excised. Small Cell Lung Cancer gets into the blood stream and tends to metastasize (spread) throughout the body. Quit smoking yesterday. It is a filthy, nasty and disgusting habit. I smoked for almost 30 years and have been smoke free for almost 7 years. I can taste and smell things better now. After I quit smoking I started to notice how wherever people smoked the stale smell of nasty cigarette smoke never left. Your hair and clothes reek of cigarette smoke. If there is any family history of cancer in your family then cigarette smoking is just plain stupid. It does not make you look cool or anything else. Since I quit I have been banked an additional $20,000 that would have gone up in smoke literally. Fear of cancer is a good thing as the incident rates of cancer have been rising with each passing year as we pump more pollutants and carcinogens into the air, water, and soil. From there it gets into our food sources. My son was diagnosed with cancer before his 3rd birthday and at one time was down to 15 lbs. and almost died. So quit smoking right away because it doesn't get any easier todo. I hoe your fears are unfounded but why take unnecessary chances with your life?
6 :
no, certainly not from smoking but it would be a very good idea if you give the smoking up.. not only is it a slow suicide for which you pay lots of money.. it is only bad for the lungs but the heart also... Smoking is no longer ''IN''... it says after 6 months of stopping smoking your risk of getting a heart attack related to smoking is half that as when you were smoking last...after 1 year the same goes the lungs after 1 after stopping the risk to get lung cancer is halfed but the Rule is.. it takes 10 years until you heart is as if you had never smoked at all and after 15 of having stopped smoking it's for the lungs as though you had never smoked... that is especially the case for those who smoked over some years...the more years you smoke the bigger the risk for heart and lung trouble is.. if you can stop now..you won't get lung cancer from smoking!!!
7 :
Just because you smoke does not mean you will get lung cancer. Some people smoke a lot and never get, and some people never smoke and get it anyways. smoking dramatically increases you chance of getting certain types of lung cancer. In the health care field, we calculate how much you've smoked in what we call pack years. To calculate your pack-years, multiply the number of packs you smoke per day, times the number of years you have smoked. (i.e. if you smoke 2 packs a day for 5 years, you have 10 pack-years). It usually takes 20 pack-years for cancer to begin developing. That is average, so that doesn't mean that it can't happen sooner or later. Chances are that you haven't done any damage as of yet, but it's still in your best interest to quit!
8 :
Cancer is more genetic than anything. It is extremely unlikely that you could get cancer from smoking for two years, and if you do have cancer, you would have gotten it anyway without smoking. So don't worry about it.
9 :
Cancer is not written down just because you're smoking. Nothing is set in concrete and one cannot assume after so many years you will get a lung cancer. Smoking with poor diet (food) will increase the likelihood of getting cancer much earlier then that would have with good diet. Listen, it usually takes a good 10 years before smoking really screws you up. But it's not to say that you can just quit after 10 years. You see lung cancer is the final result of the many years of your body being poisoned slowly day by day. The minute you light a cigarette you do damage to your lungs. It is the build up of those years that eventuall cause cancer. But some people will develop lung cancer far earlier. If you have a strong will then it is time that you decide what's good for your future. If you think you have symptoms of lung cancer then you can also reverse it, especially if you're young. You can start eating healthy food to boost your immune system. Eat lots of green vegetables and fresh fruits and juice. Stay away from acidic food and stick to all things that are categorized as alcoline. Here's a place to start you on the right direction http://healing-cafe.com/diet/

Will I get lung cancer or other serious illness by smelling/inhaling grease

Will I get lung cancer or other serious illness by smelling/inhaling grease?
I work at a restaurant as a cook, and I cook a lot, with oil and other greasy stuff, and my surroundings are all sticky and greasy, so I figure I have probably breathe in a lot of grease from the oil that evaporated to smoke in the air, so will I get ill? Would I get lung cancer as the grease gets in my lung or would my lungs just clean it by itself so there's nothing to worry about?

I have never heard of someone getting any type of cancer from inhaling grease fumes. If that were so, then a lot more ppl would be sick with cancer. So don't worry, just keep the grills clean for your customers. Be blessed

I would suggest you click on the link and call the support line. This would give you peace of mind.

Difference between advanced testicular cancer and another advance cancer such as advanced lung cancer

Difference between advanced testicular cancer and another advance cancer such as advanced lung cancer?
Why is it that one cancer (testicular cancer) has a good response to treatment even when it is in an advanced stage and then advanced lung cancer has a very poor response to treatment when it is in an advanced stage?

brandon - You're on your way to becoming a cancer specialist. In addition to the two cancers you mentioned, there are about 200 others that may be found in humans. There is no one cancer of the testis, but the main four are types of cancer that develop in the testes are seminoma, teratoma, embryonal carcinoma, and choriocarcinoma. They vary greatly in their malignant behavior from very curable to deadly and very different in their response to treatment. . There are several other cancers of the testis. Lung cancers are divided into two main groups = non small-cell and small-cell types. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) NSCLC accounts for about 80% of lung cancers. There are different types of NSCLC, including: Squamous cell carcinoma (also called epidermoid carcinoma). This is the most common type of NSCLC. It forms in the lining of the bronchial tubes and is the most common type of lung cancer in men. Adenocarcinoma. This cancer is found in the glands of the lungs that produce mucus. This is the most common type of lung cancer in women and also among people who have not smoked. Bronchioalveolar carcinoma. This is a rare subset of adenocarcinoma. It forms near the lungs' air sacs. Recent clinical research has shown that this type of cancer responds more effectively to the newer targeted therapies. Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma. This cancer forms near the surface, or outer edges, of the lungs. It can grow rapidly. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) SCLC accounts for about 20% of all lung cancers. Although the cells are small, they multiply quickly and form large tumors that can spread throughout the body. Smoking is almost always the cause of SCLC. Responses to treatment and aggressiveness vary. There is no simple and short answer to your original question.
