You could get lung cancer even if you never smoke cigarettes. My mom died of "non-smoker's" lung cancer. She never smoked in her life. Smoking GREATLY increases your risk of getting cancer, so don't smoke.
2 :
You can get other forms of lung cancer and not be a smoker at all. Remember, in this world, nothing has a 0% or 100% of happening, its all in between the two.
3 :
You can get lung cancer for other reasons than smoking. But in your case I would not smoke at all due to family history of lung cancer.

Can you live through stage four lung cancer

Can you live through stage four lung cancer?
my uncle has stage four lung cancer and i just really need to know. I'm worried.

yes
2 :
yes you can if you have a good doctor and stay positive
3 :
Not usually--sadly the prognosis is not very good for that advanced stage! "Stage 4 treatment is generally not considered ~~curative~~, though there are periodic reports of complete remissions and more of partial remission and 2,3, and even 5 year survival. "
4 :
yes, but it'll be a tough path to take.

6 :
you need to stay positive ok above all. http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=6747
7 :
my uncle had the same thing, so i know what your going through. Just stay strong n im sorry to say but my uncle didnt make it, it took a while to finally kill him but it did.Hopefully things turn out diffrent in your case.
8 :
The five-year survival is 5%.
9 :
My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and survived 6 1/2 years past the diagnosis. I have seen others dx with stage 4 and are still living today with no further treatment. He can survive, and everyone is correct , a positive attitude is a must!
10 :
You are right to be worried. You won't like my answer. "Susan" has the right answer with an estimated one chance in 20 that your uncle will survive for five years. It depends to some extent what type of lung cancer this is - small cell or non-small cell lung cancer. I cared for hundreds of these people in my twenty years as a doctor specializing in cancer. Very, very few "lived through" stage 4 - - with metastatic disease. We never want to take away someone's hope entirely, and we do not know the future. This is the time to hope for a miracle. I would gladly be wrong in this case. I'm assuming you wanted a truthful, educated answer.

If a person is alive, there is always hope Worry does not add to healing at best

Anyone knows about the Presumptive Disabled Medi-cal? My dad has terminal lung cancer needs a medicine Tarceva

Anyone knows about the Presumptive Disabled Medi-cal? My dad has terminal lung cancer needs a medicine Tarceva?
I called the Medi-cal Office; they asked me to provide them with my dad's recent medical documents, but my dad hasn't seen doctors for long. Is a doctor's statement saying my dad would only have six-month life enough for applying this medi-cal? Does anyone know if the lung cancer medicine called Tarceva is covered by Medi-cal? Thank you very very much!

Someone in the doctors office, or the billing office at the hospital should have the answers to your questions. And they should be able to help you quickly. Ask the doctor where to go for answers to your billing questions. Also ask the doctor about hospice. If he has said you dad has only six months to live, he is eligible for hospice. They will do most of this for you.

They don't make them for lung cancer, actually. They have them for almost everything else, but they don't exsist. Maybe you should start them...

How can lung cancer (tumor) spread to the brain

How can lung cancer (tumor) spread to the brain?
Mother in Law was told she had lung cancer and it had spread to the brain. 4 tumors were located 2 deep two smaller ones located on the right side of brain. That orginated from the lung, We have gone over the types of cancer and the stages our question is how does the tumor break off or spread to the brain?
Cancer - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I am not a doctor or anything, but I don't think tumors spread, only cancers do.
2 :
Cancer spreads through the lymphatic system. Once that system is infected, it usually means that the disease is terminal. Docs will usually quit treatments and just make the person comfortable for the remainder of the time they have left when this happens.
3 :
Individual cells from the tumor break off and travel through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body. Sorry to hear of your mother-in-laws illness and hope you can help her cope.
4 :
Lung cancer cells can metastasize to the brain through blood circulation. It's possible for small or microscopic cancer cells to travel throughout the body in this way. This is one reason that oncologist recommend systemic chemotherapy because it follows the same paths as the cancer does through the blood circulation. You can read more about metastatic secondary lung cancers: Brain, Metastases http://www.emedicine.com/Radio/topic101.htm Secondary Brain tumor http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Cancertype/Brainsecondary/Secondarybraintumours Lung cancer that has spred to the brain http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=3765

They erformed the gamma knife procedure on the brain tumor. He went thru radiation chemo gamma knife and took a drug called tarceva. He fought a hard fight and sadly he passed June 6th. Lung cancer is very aggresive. He had cancer in his sinus bones renal glands all over. So very sorry to hear about your mother in law. Stay strong I will be thinking of your family.

what are the chances of a granuloma in the lung turning into cancer

what are the chances of a granuloma in the lung turning into cancer?
i have one that has been there for 9 ys...i found out about it after i had had it for 5 yrs...now i have another one...i had a chest x-ray 2 months ago and it wasn't there and i had another one today and it is there in my left lung...the first one is in the right....i am really scared and want to know the statics for these turning into lung cancer...they said it is a calcified granuloma..
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Calcified changing to cancer is very low chances. Actually, impossible.
2 :
A calcified granuloma is the result of damage to the tissue, usually from an infection. So if you had TB or a fungus or something. It is mistaken for cancer in chest x-rays but it can't "turn into" cancer. I hope this helps!
3 :
The odds are close to zero. Granulomas are similar to a scar that is caused by an injury to the lung from an infection or some type of particle you breathed in. If a granuloma is calcified, then its almost impossible for it to become cancerous. Calcified granulomas are usually caused by a previous fungal infection in the lungs (histoplasmosis).
4 :
All three answers are correct, so don't worry be happy God bless.

Im 18 and smoked for 2 years and lung cancer is in my genes i just quit but have chest pains should i worry

Im 18 and smoked for 2 years and lung cancer is in my genes i just quit but have chest pains should i worry?
Both my grandparents died from lung cancer. im 18 years old and have been smoking since i was 16 but i just quit 3 weeks ago. I also started working out and running. I however get sharp pains in my chest when i breath in and sometimes randomly get weird feelings in my chest area when i breath in too. Should i be worried about lung cancer?

You are probably just out of shape, since you just started working out AND just quit smoking - the chemicals do different things in your lungs, so they're adjusting to the absence of smoke. I'd say as long as the discomfort is only when you've been exercising, don't worry at all, just work toward getting in shape gradually. If it's more frequent than that, you should probably check with your doctor - not necessarily because it's cancer, but because there are other things that could cause you to feel poorly and the dr. can help you figure out what the problem is.
2 :
maybe your lungs are quite adjusting because it's been 3 weeks already without nicotine.. so i guess continue quitting while it still early especially lung cancer is in your genes..
3 :
The good thing about quitting smoking is that your body can recover almost completely from the effects in a few years. Your lungs are in the process of cleaning themselves out. It can take about six months for your lungs to get cleared out. You may end up coughing up black goo, which is actually a good thing.
4 :
Your Lungs are detoxing themselves! I hope you never start again, I have seen too many xrays from people that have cancerous nodules in their lungs and also seen many patients suffering from the disease, ENOUGH to make you want to quit!
5 :
the answer is in my sources
6 :
well you should do a chest x-ray and it will show what's wrong ,anyway you should also keep doing that regularly to find out any abnormality fast you can visit this site about relation of smoking to lung cancer Lung cancer http://lungcancerdestroyer.blogspot.com/

Does owning birds lead to lung cancer

Does owning birds lead to lung cancer?
I was just reading my environmental science book for school and all of a sudden I see something that says "owning birds for at least 10 years doubles your risk for lung cancer due to the inhalation of bird dander." Um, wow. Bad news. Because my family has owned birds our entire lives. Is this really true? It's really bothering us because we can't undo those years of owning birds and, besides, we love our pet birds. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Birds - 5 Answers

1 :
No, you can't get cancer from birds. You can, however, get a severe allergy or have an asthma attack if you own a cockatoo or another dusty bird ('toos are the worst) but you can prevent this by getting a good filter and bathing the birds regularly. Here's a website all about it: http://www.cockatootrainer.com/allergies/
2 :
I don't think that's very true. As long as you keep the birds clean then you should be fine. sometimes books are not 100% accurate.
3 :
People with asthma, allergies or respiratory problems can experience breathing problems from feather dander. Even those who can tolerate some feather dust, may not be able to handle the additional dust produced by a Powder Down Bird. There is a disease called allergic alveolitis (also known as budgerigar dander pneumonicosis, bird breeder's disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and pigeon breeder's lung) which affects the lungs and occurs in people who are hypersensitive to feathers, feather dust, and fecal material -- expecially from pigeons and budgies. You can read more about it in Allergic Alveolitus. Feather Dust can be easily spread throughout a home. Birds have a wide variety of feathers, from large flight feathers to tiny down feathers. Read more about feathers at Feathers. The tiny down feathers, small pieces of feathers and other feather particles are very light and can easily be carried throughout the area by traffic, air currents and even via air conditioning and heating ducts. The Powder Down Birds have an additional type of feather. Powder down feathers are small specialized feathers that shed a very fine, white, waxy powder composed of keratin. Powder down forms a waterproof barrier for contour feathers and is spread through the feathers when the bird grooms. Cockatiels, Cockatoos and African Greys, produce the greatest amount of powder on their feathers. If one strokes a powder down bird, it will feel very silky and soft. And when done, there will often be a coating of fine white powder on the hand. As mentioned above, powder down can cause irritation to people with respiratory problems and allergies. Most parrots - except amazons and a few of the macaws - have a preen gland (uropygial gland) which is found on the back at the base of the tail. When a bird grooms its feathers, it spreads the secretions from the gland throughout its feathers. This is important for waterproofing the feathers, manufacturing vitamin D precursors, keeping the skin, feathers, and bill supple, and performing an antibacterial function. But it also causes feather dust to be slightly sticky and difficult to remove.
4 :
Well I sure as heck hope not. I bred cockatiels for over 10 years. I will say tho, that I did develop an allergy to them. But as soon as I gave up breeding, my problems stopped. The Dr recommended that I get rid of them so that I did not develop asthma. But he never said anything about cancer. Where do people come up with this stuff anyway? Theres always some one saying some thing will cause cancer.... Geeezzze. But that's not your question. I really don't think that having a couple of birds around you will cause cancer. Remember, I was breeding, I had 8 pairs of cockatiels, That's a lot of bird handling. Some people I know that are breeders have been doing it for twice as long as I did and still don't have any allergies. So..... If you only have a couple birds at a time, and you keep the cages clean I wouldn't think you could get cancer. If you are really worried about it, ask you Dr the next time you see him/her.
5 :
Well if that's true, couldn't the same be said about people with extremely dusty homes? ;) Unless you're living with dozens of birds in a small space, I think there would be a lot more regular house dust than bird dust in the air.
