Can pneumonia be mistaken for tuberculosis or lung cancer

Can pneumonia be mistaken for tuberculosis or lung cancer?
My grandfather is currently in the hospital with pneumonia. He has a mass on his lung and they said they are going to be testing for tuberculosis that he may have gotton when he served in the Korean war nearly 60 years ago. They are also going to test for lung cancer. He's lost 15lbs in a week, he gets the chills and he has a cough..I'm not sure what else hes feeling. Anybody know any knowledgable information on these 3 diseases?

Believe that they are running all these test to be sure of the diagnosis. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish. My mother used to get diagnosed with pneumonia a lot, when in reality what they were seeing on the xray was scaring from COPD (Chronic Pulmonary Disease). Fifteen pounds is a tremendous amount of weight to lose in a week however, but that could be explained from being ill and not being able to eat much. I know it is hard to wait for test results, but try not to panic. They will find out the answer and treat your grandfather for whatever is the problem. I am sure he is already on intravenous antibiotics. Take care and try not to stress.

Pneumonia is a mass or water in the lungs that they have to drain out what they do is they stick a chest tube in your ribs and they put tape to hold it in place Cancer is when you loose a lot weight at one shot like what you said 15 lbs in a week the chills and so on and so forth Tuberculosis is a disease that they can treat with medications hope this helps you.

If all smokers developed terminal lung cancer, whom would they blame, themselves or the tobacco companies

If all smokers developed terminal lung cancer, whom would they blame, themselves or the tobacco companies?
They must think they are immune to lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease.

We are all responsible for our own actions.
2 :
the smoker is because it's like you go buy a gun and then shoot someone it is not the companies fault for selling you that gun.
3 :
I was a smoker and am a breast cancer survivor. Had my diagnosis been lung cancer, I could only blame myself. But as there is a poor link between smoking and breast cancer, there is no one for me to blame. In most cases, a cancer patient/survivor who looks for someone to blame, is not working through the acceptance process all the way. And by the way, don't kid yourself. We all think we're immune to cancer because we're "healthy," "have a good immune system," are rich, pretty, don't smoke, don't go to tanning salons, whatever. No one thinks they are going to get it. For the vast majority of people who get cancer, they really didn't DO anything to deserve it. Get over yourself.
4 :
Its called an addiction. Most smokers quit smoking at least 2 or 3 times before they are able to stick to it. It may be the hardest thing they've ever done. Its nitwits like you who really bother me. I would much rather sit next to a person who smokes than you. You think you are holier than someone who has a bad habit? Your brain is screwed up and you can't quit that.
5 :
Smoking didnt cause lung cancer in me, but it did cause leukemia. Ultimatly, I blame myself because at the end of the line I am responsible for my own actions. However, I have to tell you, when I picked up that first cig when I was 13, the health risks were the farthest from my mind. Most of the adults in my family smoked. My uncle died of a smoking related cancer, but that wasnt until years later. My aunt had a heart attack when I was 12, but that was more due to other risks factors than smoking. My mom smoked and never even tried to quit. I just wasnt worried about something that only might happen 60 years down the road. Too bad I was only 21 when I was diagnosed. I DO however, feel that the tobacco companies do need to take some sort of responsibility. Their advertising is limited now, but they used to and sort of still do target young people in their ads. There is no real reason why they have to add in all those additives that make commercial cigs so dangerous. I basically feel like the cig companies do everything they can to get people to smoke and keep smoking. As I said, at the end of the day i am responsible for my own actions, but when and where do the cig companies take repsonsibility for THEIR actions???
6 :
Yea! It is part companies fault! If they wouldn't sell it to you and make it so damn addicting we wouldn't be hooked would we? If you don't have it then you can't use it!
7 :
hi you can found information about your problem in this blog http://drugtreatmentforcancer.blogspot.com/ thx:)

How does lung cancer kill humans

How does lung cancer kill humans?
I recently had a friend lose the battle to lung cancer, and I want to know how he died. Was it suffocation?
Cancer - 14 Answers

1 :
no the cancer destroyed his lungs and spread to his heart
2 :
its not worth knowing, trust me. Just know that he is safe now and with god :)
3 :
basically
4 :
Lung Cancer is a disease that begins in the tissue of the lungs. The lungs are sponge-like organs that are part of the respiratory system. During breathing, air enters the mouth or nasal passage and travels down the trachea. The trachea splits into two sets of bronchial tubes that lead to the left and right lung. The bronchi branch off into smaller and smaller tubes that eventually end in small balloon-like sacs known as alveoli. The alveoli are where oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other substances are exchanged between the lungs and the blood stream.
5 :
Skippy is not a Dr, but he thinks you pretty much need your lungs.
6 :
umm.. well there are many ways.. maybe he used drugs..the tart can be stuck in his liver or lungs and clogged for his breathing of oxygen. eating unhealthy stuff..such as eating too much fat and oils or maybe its just genetic in his heredity life.
7 :
sometimes a tumor can cause suffocation, but often it is just the deadening of the cells. When they start dying, they can no longer transfer oxygen around the body, and eventually his blood will have too little oxygen, causing his heart to slowly stop beating. It's almost like starvation, except of the heart not the stomach. I am sorry for your loss, and I hope this helped your question.
8 :
Well I had a grandma who had breast cancer she survived 16 years with it and I think he died because he couldn't breath or his body just couldn't take it anymore.
9 :
Sorry to hear about your friend. My father also died from lung cancer. But not the cancer itself. He died of complications from pneumonia.
10 :
suffocation is the round about answer.... its hard to explain... basically cancer eats up your good cells leaving no room for more to reproduce.... the body (white blood cells) cant fight of the "bad cells" so the immune system weakens (you don't use it you lose it).... the cancer can eventually take over the body and essentially "suffocate" it to death....
11 :
Lung cancer kills u by slow suffocation It starts out like this Your cells in your lungs start growing abnormally and cant function properly. Cant inhale exhale sort of thing When these abnormal cell become so large you start coming short of breath. This is how it kills you keep getting shorter and shorter breaths till you suffocate. Also Chemotherapy kills too. Chemo kills the bad cells ( the abnormal ones ) and the good cells. The chemical in chemo destroys all the cells aruond the bad cells. So if your friend took chemo and radiation thats also how he died
12 :
well from a biology viewpoint...cells in the lungs became mutated which caused them to not stop growing when they reached a certain point. they continued to grow and created a tumor. i dont know exactly what happened to your friend but usually the cancerous cells continue to reproduce elsewhere in the body which can lead to death. im very sorry to hear about your friend.
13 :
Cells have a natural function to "turn off" or die after a set amount of time. cancer cells have that function turned off, so they just keep replicating and make a massive blob called a tumor. if the tumor, and all infected cells are not removed, it blocks up the lungs and doesn't allow oxygen into them. Sorry about your friend.

um, you can't breath eventually. I'm thinking that this would effect your daily life...
2 :
You need to do your own homework dude.
3 :
I'm pretty sure you can't play that many sports and you have trouble breathing. Good luck!-
4 :
My mom has had surgery for lung cancer twice (sections of both lungs have been removed) and really her life isn't much different. An interesting fact, I've read different places that stated quality of life is the best predictor of outcome (survival) I did include a link to one article about that, there are many.

How long does it take to get lung cancer

How long does it take to get lung cancer?
I'm 15. I don't live in a polluted area. I smoke marijuana maybe 10 times a year. I've had 1 drag of a tobacco cigarette. I have a bad throat lately, and white, painless bumps on the back of my tongue. Lung cancer?

Rofl dude -.- I'm 19 and I've smoked for about 6 years now and I feel fine :P and I have a family history of cancer... And the white lumps you see in the back of your tongue are nothing to worry about, Also if you are worried just see a doctor :P
2 :
Go and see a doctor to get it checked if you are worried, but the bumps on your tongue are probably nothing to worry about. You don't smoke much so it's unlikely you have lung cancer. There is no predictable time it takes to get cancer, some people smoke their whole lives and don't get it and others get it young. It depends on your genes and other lifestyle factors. Some people get it just from passive smoking.
3 :
Chris I've seen these things before. It sounds like strep throat. I'll tell you what a Dr told me once when I asked about lung cancer because I used to smoke. She told me that when lung cancer shows up on an x-ray, it's usually too late by then. That was 30 yrs ago, I'm sure better things are used now to detect lung cancer and it does not manifest itself with white spots and sore throat. Go get a strep test because that;s what it sounds like. Do it soon because it's very contagious. Good luck Hope you feel better.
4 :
LOL, since when was a sore throat lung cancer? It takes years to get from any of these things, if you do have cancer it's from something else. And at 15 it's far too rare to worry about.
5 :
depends. my mom smoked for 20 years, quit for 17, got lung cancer and wasn't told about it for 2 years.

Yeah, it sounds like lung cancer.
2 :
Many, many illnesses can cause the symptoms you describe. Cancer is a possibility, but far from the only one. It's nice you are concerned and says a lot about the kind of boss he must be.
3 :
There are many, many different illnesses out there that are not cancer. He could have something else wrong with him! Don't count him out yet.

Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer?
I smoked for a little over 5 years, about a pack a day, and i quit last november. ever since i quit i have frequently felt as though there is some phlegm stuck in the back of my throat. i am expelling this phlegm out thruout the day, sometimes it is really bad and other days hardly noticable. sometimes i try so hard to get it out it scratches my throat and tiny bit of blood comes out mixed witih my phlegm..my phlegm is generally clear and not too thick..i am 21...what could it be? i am paranoid that it is lung cancer

Go see a doctor now and stop guessing - he'll tell you exactly what is wrong with you.
2 :
I don't think that is a sign of lung cancer. Usually lung cancer develops later in life.. i am curious to know myself, I just stopped smoking and heard that one of the annoying aspects is this persistent phlegm. I have experienced it so far [but worst the first few weeks] .
