I am not 100% sure but cancer can spread anywhere. But one thing I have recently learned is that is he has lung cancer, that means the primary tumor is in his lung. If it spreads to his blood, or anywhere else, it is still lung cancer but it is lung cancer that has spread to the blood, or wherever. It is still lung cancer, though. From an unfortunate and very recent experience with this terrible disease, one thing you need to always keep in mind. Really. Read this carefully: Everyone will react differently. Everyone's cancer will progress or go away differently. So my advice to you is: 1> ALWAYS remain positive. While some cancer survival rates are very low, with lung cancer being one of them, SOMEONE has to be the one to survive so why not your friend? -and 2> While being positive, it is very important that you not lose sight of what the other end of the spectrum could be. Failure to keep the best AND worst case scenario in mind will only cause you more suffering. So, even if it seems like things are dire, keep hope alive. But be realistic as well. Treatments are also very personal. The type and stage of cancer will determine treatment. Generally, surgical removal of the tumor, radiation, chemotherapy are the big ones. But again, talk to his doctor for the best treatment for him.

Cancer spreads to distant sites through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. However, if someone has lung cancer and later develops leukemia it is a separate disease not caused by metastases.

Mohamad, As-Salaam (السلام). A cancer that starts in the lung ("primary lung site") can grow (invade) veins in the lung and then move (metastasize) to the left side of the heart and out the aorta artery to almost everywhere in the body. When these lung cancer cells are in the blood, it is not called leukemia but rather circulating tumor cells in the blood. Leukemia is just one form of cancer that refers to immature and/or abnormal white blood cells ("leukocytes") which are seem first in the circulating blood and then may appear in any body tissues, including the lung. Most tumor cells are much larger than white blood cells (leukocytes) and cannot circulate in tiny blood vessels (capillaries). There is no true connection between lung cancer and leukemia, of which there are several types).
