Is it possible for lung cancer to me misdiagnosed as pneumonia

Is it possible for lung cancer to me misdiagnosed as pneumonia?
I've been diagnosed with pneumonia, but my mother is insisting that I seek more medical treatment to make sure I don't have lung cancer. Wouldn't lung cancer have shown in the CT scan they did to diagnose my pneumonia???

It would absoultly show in a CT scan

No... when they x-ray your chest they wont see fluid in your lungs but masses of cancer instead.

I am positive a doctor would know the difference. Set your mind at ease and ask for a blood test or whatever is needed to confirm it. Your mum sounds quite negetive!

You should listen to your mom to be on the safe side. My daughter had the same thing happen to her, and a second diagnosis did come back as lung cancer. She had a PET scan to get an accurate diagnosis. If you have come down with pneumonia without having a cold or flu, you need to get a second opinion. Also if the pneumonia will not respond to normal antibiotic treatment or goes away and returns, that is another sign.

Lung cancer is different than pneumonia, for pneumonia your chests are diagnosed and for lung cancer it is your lungs. If you are diagnosed with pneumonia don't worry it is totally diff, but go to a better Dr. just in case.

One of my best friends just lost her husband because of a similar situation. He had been sick for over a year. Trips back and forth to the doctor. Said he had bronchitis and pneumonia. Unfortunately when they discovered that it was cancer, he was already in stage 4. I would seek a second opinion. What's the worst it would do?

it is possible. if your symptoms do not get better or worsen then you should get a second opinion. lung cancer is diagnosed by biopsy of the tissue to see if it has malignant cells. on ct or x-ray a mass may seem suspicous but the final diagnosis is made by biopsy.

it would show up on a ct scan if you are concerned get a second opinion

My sister had three chest xrays that showed nothing. The CT showed a 5mm tumor. You can be misdiagnosed for anything. However, the xray should show fluid so your doc is probably right.

your mom isn't an md obviously. they have gone above and beyond with the scan...listen to the docs get well soon
