I cant find anything but statistics like "90% of lung cancer is caused by smoking" I don't wanna know what percentage of lung caner is caused by smoking. I wanna know what percentage of life long smokers develope lung cancer... I smoke about 1/2 a pack a day and I just wanna what my chances are of developing cancer from it later on. PLEASE! Only educated answers...

I don't know the exact percent but I know it is the majority. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the US and this is from smoking so if you think about it the majority do. Or at least have to be on oxygen when they are older, believe me I have seen plenty.

Your best bet is to check with your local cancer society. My friend is in the process of doing research after her own experience with the disease (does work in the medical field) after losing her own mother to this horrible disease on a similar topic. However, hers has a twist - how the age you begin smoking affects your life expectancy! She has noticed since her mom got sick that many people who began smoking in their early teens, die in their mid 50s. Her theory is that when one begins smoking during those crucial years, the toxins are more readily absorbed as your body is still growing. Many people who are smokers in their 90s seem to defy the odds but the vast majority did not start until well into their 20's. It will be interesting to see what the stats are but it is something I too have noticed. It's not exactly the answer you were looking for but hopefully will give you something to think about!!

No, it is not a majority - it is a minority of chronic smokers who go on to develop lung cancer. Here's info from a Canadian study that asked this same question: Male smokers - lifetime risk of lung cancer is 1 in 6 [so 5 out of 6 chronic smokers never got lung cancer in his study] Female smokers รข€“ the risk of lung cancer is 1 in 9 Risk of lung cancer in non-smokers is 1 in 77 Can J Public Health. 1994 Nov-Dec;85(6):385-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7895211 Note that most people get away with smoking as far as lung cancer. But cancers of the mouth, throat esophagus, stomach and bladder are also increased in chronic smokers. There are also cardiovascular and lung disease risks. One estimate is that about half of chronic smokers will have one or more of the many adverse medical consequences from their smoking addiction. Best thing is to quit if you can. Then your risk will drop back over the next 15 -20 years to something very close to the risk of a person who never smoked.
